The Comeback: Cassius Baloyi to fight at The Armoury Boxing Club
Two renowned contenders will be facing each other in the ring; it’s bound to be a knock-out!
The Armoury Boxing Club’s latest edition of Fight Night will see popular Armoury Coach, Aladin Kalwira, go against World Boxing Champion Cassius Baloyi. On Saturday, 28 July 2017, the two fighters will clash in a bout that has been titled “The Comeback”. The exhibition fight will mark the first time a world title champion has graced the Mother City for such an event; boxing fans are in for a treat.
Baloyi has a reason for visiting Cape Town; the Limpopo-born athlete is promoting a one-day Boxing Clinic that he will be holding on Saturday, 2 September 2017, at The Armoury. Other than being a professional sparrer in the ring, he is also an excellent coach – after all, he has a decent amount of boxing experience. The clinic will give aspiring boxers a chance to train and learn with the record-breaking boxer, and pick up some tricks of the trade.
Baloyi will also be offering training prior to his clinic during his visit later this month! He’ll be based at The Armoury as a guest coach from Wednesday, 26 to Saturday, 29 July 2017.
If you’re unfamiliar with Cassius Baloyi, you won’t be after this night. Named after the late Cassius Clay – otherwise known as Muhammad Ali – Baloyi was born to be a boxing star. He started training at the age of 8, coached by his father Eric Baloyi, who is still an active coach. It paid off – the athlete, whilst amateur, fought 200 amateur bouts and lost only three of them. In 1992 he was ranked number one in the world, and has won six world titles. Fans knew him as ‘the Shy Guy’ until he became ‘Hitman’ due to his unbeatable form in a fight.
The Armoury Boxing Club is one of the oldest in Cape Town and is the place to go if you’re looking to start boxing. Top-notch training is provided here and the concept is boxing as a recreational sport that develops discipline and character. It’s a welcoming, inclusive club and has several female members – breaking the stereotype of boxing being a macho man activity. You’ll also find they host tons of regular events.
On the night you’ll be able to grab some delicious sliders (they’re those mini-burgers), and boeries, provided by the Woodstock Deli. It’s a cash bar so get to an ATM beforehand. Children are welcome – however, the price for their entry is the same as that of adults.
