You can now watch the Fugard’s most loved plays at home
Stream the Fugard Theatre’s top productions, including Master Harold and The Road to Mecca
The Fugard Theatre has cancelled its 2020 season, but it has reopened its doors virtually to live-stream its popular productions of Master Harold...and the Boys and The Road to Mecca as of June 2020.
THE SHOW MUST GO ON
As a free streaming platform, you’ll not only get to watch and rewatch all of the Fugard’s award-winning productions, but you’ll get a full 360-degree tour of The Fugard foyer. Virtually walk around to get a full view of the Fugard piano, the ticket booth, drinks bar or past production paintings. It’s almost like being there in person.
IT WILL BE AN EVER-EVOLVING VIRTUAL PLATFORM
There will be more than exceptional productions starring award-winning actors and playwrights. The Fugard at Home is also introducing The Performer Series. Here, The Fugard performers, playwrights and production teams can film, under strict hygiene regulations, snippets of production pieces they had planned to present in the 2020 season.
Expect a sneak-peek into unseen footage from the productions of Hamlett, Night Mother, A German Life and Pieter Dirk Uys. Plus, you’ll get to watch brand new works covering dance, poetry and live music.
A NATIONAL HERITAGE SITE AND ICONIC THEATRE
The Fugard opened its doors in legendary District Six within the historic Sacks Futeran building. It started out as a textile and soft goods supplier in the early twentieth century, frequented by generations of District Six seamstresses and tailors. As a Cape Town treasure, a lot of care has been taken to preserve this spectacular playhouse and its national heritage.
IN HONOUR OF ATHOL FUGARD
Named after the man himself, Athol Fugard is South Africa’s most significant and internationally acclaimed playwright. Athol brought South Africa to tears of laughter, to joy and to heart-wrenching sadness. His plays reflected both the good and barbarity in South Africa with a kind-of talent that cannot be replicated.
The theatre proudly holds his name and provides a space where Athol’s creativity and humanity can thrive.
