Catch Legendary Playwright Tennessee Williams’ Masterpiece
See a professional staging of a play not shown in Cape Town for three decades
The glass what? If you haven’t seen a professional staging of Tennessee Williams’ masterpiece, The Glass Menagerie, then you’re in for a special treat. The Artscape Arena brings this 1944 classic to the stage in a fresh, local production that will engage and entertain audiences from 1 November until 30 November.
“It’s the quintessential family drama – a haunting, poetic, lyrical examination of love, loss and all the ties that bind us,” is how Marcel Meyer (costume designer and the actor who plays The Gentleman Caller) describes The Glass Menagerie.
When we say it’s a masterpiece, we really mean it. This play has been translated into over twenty languages, and continues to be performed on stages around the world, 75 years after it first took to the stage in Chicago.
“To celebrate this timeless gem and its legendary American playwright, you can expect a star-studded revival of this modern classic, the first professional staging of this play in the mother city in three decades,” says Fred Abrahamse from Abrahamse and Meyer Productions, the independent classical theatre company staging the play. And he should know. The last time The Glass Menagerie was staged in Cape Town, was at the Baxter Theatre in September 1989. Fred Abrahamse was the director.
WHERE BIG NAMES COME TOGETHER
Multi-award winning Fred Abrahamse directs and designs. Fiona Ramsay stars as Amanda Wingfield; Jenny Stead plays Laura Wingfield; Matthew Baldwin plays Tom Wingfield, and Marcel Meyer plays Jim O’Conner, the Gentleman Caller. Faheem Bardien is responsible for lighting design and the play has an original score by Jaco Griessel.
