The Great Wizoo
Great company, quality food and drinks that won’t break your pocket
From being the Rondebosch sports club house people only flock to for soccer practise during the week, and on Saturday’s for soccer games, to it taking on a life of its own when Chris Boyes-Moffatt and Kirsten Moffatt turned it into The Great Wizoo in 2014. The whimsical name of the bar came from, musical legend, Frank Zappa’s album The Great Wazoo, as Kirsten and Chris are jazz lovers and Kirsten even studied music at UCT. Chris was the owner of the cool chill spot in Jozi The Bowling Club. This little secret haven is the perfect place to break bread, have a drink with family and friends, and has become one of my favourite hang-out spots.
Totally unpretentious and authentic; this is the perfect place for someone who is just looking for some good grub, affordable drinks, great conversations and laughs, and to catch the game with friends. There’s a certain charm to the football memorabilia on the walls, mismatched couches and benches; it gives you the sense of comfortability and you just know, without much effort, that you’re going to have a great time. It’s in quite close proximity to UCT so The Great Wizoo caters for the pockets of those still living the ‘student life’. The food is amazing and affordable, personal favourites being the pizza’s with prices ranging from R45.00 - R55.00.The most expensive dish you’ll find on the menu is The Big B which is a Sirloin steak with camembert, bacon, avo, fries and topped with onion rings for R85.00. The drinks are absolutely irresistible, especially their cocktails which are R40 each and are not watered down. All ciders are less than R20.00. The Great Wizoo is all about quality drinks, food and company.
Once you’ve experience the great, relaxed and welcoming ambience this eatery/pub has to offer, you’ll definitely want to come back. If you’re an up and coming talent or just love live music, check out their open nights, as well as the bands they have playing from time to time. It becomes an intimate, robust setting, where you’ll find yourself just focusing on the music and the pure joy of your company and nothing else.
If you wish to have a private event, be it a birthday party, stag or bachelorette party , they are always willing to assist with a venue and scrumptious platters. Refer to their website for available dates and if it’s suitable for you, all you have to do is temporarily book the date you desire and schedule a meeting to go and see the venue( you may bring your own tables and chair if you wish as well). Like I’ve said before, everything about this place is affordable and the quality of service is amazing overall. So if you’re looking for a great place to hang out or have a huge bash on a budget, but you want A-grade service and quality of food and drinks, The Great Wizoo is where you’ll definitely find that.
