Here’s What’s on at Jazz Week at The Piano Bar in De Waterkant
The Piano Bar is getting into the swing of jazz festivities with this line-up of different artists for every night of the week
Every year during late March, Cape Town gets into full jazz mode. The Cape Town International Jazz Festival attracts thousands from the world over, but did you know that an entire week has been dedicated to this diverse form of music that isn’t affiliated with the festival?
Instead, enjoy a more intimate setting with live jazz music every day of the week from Monday 19 to Saturday, 24 March at The Piano Bar. This stylish De Waterkant entertainment venue and restaurant plays host to this week-long tribute with an exciting line-up of live music.
Among them will be local musos Francois Botha, whose blend of classical, jazz and show tunes makes for a highly entertaining performance. A rising star in local musical circle is Daniel Fernandes, who’s live performance is guaranteed to get your foot tapping.
The Collective is a three-piece band who plays both covers and originals, with a style described as a blues painted, jazz tainted journey with elements of funk and classic rock, while The Jo Kunnuji Experiment is a collective of some of South Africa’s top, young jazz musicians. The group spins groovy bass lines merged with piano riffs, rhythmic bedrock drums with the addition of trumpet and sax – the result is an eclectic form of jazz which screams proudly South African.
Dan Shout is another local artist who’s making waves on the music scene. He’s a respected saxophonist who’s played in over 30 countries, performing alongside the likes of Johnny Clegg, The Rudimentals and the Cape Town Jazz Orchestra, to name a few.

The week culminates on Saturday, 24 March, when the Cape Town Jazz Festival kicks off, where a special event is set to take place at The Piano Bar; a special three-course meal will be served to the sound of The Jo Kunnuji Experiment.
“Sociable food” is what you can look forward to at this feast – three fantastic courses, designed for sharing, and perfectly paired with jazz. The first course entails a sharing board, consisting of serrano ham, parmigiano, caperberries, bruschetta, roasted artichokes, goat’s cheese, caramelised pear, bocconcini, rosa tomatoes and fresh basil. The second course will be a board of tapas, including lemon risotto finished off with lemon zest, baked carrot palmier (pastry filled with a creamy carrot and thyme puree, topped with a cashew nut crumble), grilled calamari (tossed in the pan with chilli, garlic, lemon juice and fresh herbs), tempura prawns and lastly, beef medallions served on a potato and leek rosti finished off with creamed horseradish and micro herbs. Dessert will be choux pastry profiteroles filled with a creme patisserie and drizzled with dark chocolate.
All of this, while being kept entertained by some of the finest jazz the Mother City has to offer!
