Known favourites and new discoveries at the V&A Waterfront’s Watershed
825 square-meters of the best in African art, craft, design, and now beauty
Expect old favourites and some new discoveries, plus the spacious modern interior that’s bathed in natural light and vibrant colours at the Watershed at the V&A Waterfront. Doors open every Thursday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm.
The 825 square-metre loft-like industrial space at the Waterfront precinct is the home of South African design, where you will meet and buy from ceramists, sculptors, painters, jewellers, clothing and shoe designers, textile and furniture makers. New to the Watershed is a beauty category, a recently added section for ethical skin and hair care product makers.
SHOP LOCAL FROM OVER 150 TRADERS
The Watershed “showcases the best of what we have to offer in South Africa in terms of design and crafts – it’s truly an African design story”, says V&A Waterfront retail executive Alex Kabalin. The space is host to over 150 tenants (and more than 365 brands), making it the single biggest collection of design and craft in South Africa.
FLIP FLOP SCULPTURES TO CAN TAB JEWELLERY
You’ll meet traders like sculptor Davis Ndungu, who runs Recycled Flip Flop Sculptures. He turns recycled flip flops found washed up on the beaches of Southern Africa into technicolour sculptures of animals. Or Tamburai Chirume ,who started One of Each by designing African inspired luxury handbags, fashion and accessories.
TREAT YOURSELF AT THE BEAUTY SECTION
Every brand and stall tells a story. The new beauty section for skincare and hair products produced by ethical brands like Skoon, who describe their brand as kind, clean and scientific;Ubuntu Traditional Balms, whose products use old African remedies; and Chill Cape Town, who sell simple, natural skincare.
There is a covetable piece for any one and every tribe at the Watershed – whether you are spending R10 or R10 000.
For Covid-19 Safety: The Watershed is cleaned and sanitized more regularly. It’s a natural ventilated, open space (no air conditioning) with sufficient distance between stalls for social distancing. Plus, all tenants’ temperatures are scanned in the mornings.
