The Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon, which is arguably one of the world’s most beautiful sporting events, invites local and international competitors to push their bodies to the limit on Easter Saturday, 31 March 2018 in Cape Town.
As in past, the grueling 56-km run (the ultra marathon), alongside the 21-km half marathon and the various associated trail and fun runs, draws sporting enthusiasts from across the globe to the scenic Cape Peninsula for a unique and trying athletic experience.
Inaugurated in 1970, the competition has developed into the biggest and most popular road race in the nation, with 11, 000 runners taking part in the ultra marathon and 16, 000 runners taking part in the half marathon each year. During its 46-year tenure, the ultra marathon has seen over 50 South Africans (across both men’s and women’s categories) take the winning title, along with almost a dozen Russians, half a dozen Basothos and half a dozen Zimbabweans.
However, this major sporting event is not just for the serious competitor; the Two Oceans Marathon’s offshoots cater to all types of runners and experience levels: there are 12-km and 24-km trail runs, which take participants along the lower slopes of Devil’s Peak and through the forests above the University of Cape Town (UCT). The two trail runs are great for both beginners and experienced runners and offer a challenging experience with steep ascents and descents.
A series of fun runs and the International Friendship Run also take place at the UCT rugby fields and in the city centre, respectively, for those who want to get into the spirit of things without going the extra mile or ten.
And it’s not only about physical exertion as this major event will also play host to an annual expo where sporting enthusiasts can get the lowdown on hot running trends, apparel and supplements (the legal kind) and the latest news on outdoor adventure sports, tours and more.
