The Comrades Marathon has gone virtual: Here’s how to enter
Compare your time to legends like Bruce Fordyce, Frith van der Merwe and Samuel Tshabalala
Ever wondered how your race time would compare to those of long-distance greats, like Bruce Fordyce or Samuel Tshabalala? The 2020 Comrades Marathon is cancelled, and the Comrades Marathon Association has launched a virtual race, where runners of all fitness levels can compete against each other as well as long-distance legends on Sunday, 14 June 2020.
HOW THE VIRTUAL MARATHON WORKS
“‘Race The Comrades Legends” lets you run the ultramarathon (or even the 5km fun run) at your own pace from any location, be it on your treadmill, in your garden or around your neighbourhood (subject to government regulations, of course).
You will then upload your race results manually or by using fitness apps (like Garmin and Strava) to your online runner profile on the Comrades website. The results will include fun and novel finishers’ comparisons that can then be pitted against Comrades Legends, like Wally Hayward or Zola Budd. You'll be able to compare your race position to theirs over previous Comrades runs, and your performance percentage-wise in your age category.
Plus, all athletes who finish their respective distances will receive a medal and an online finishers certificate.
FROM A FUN RUN TO THE ULTRAMARATHON
How fit are you? You can choose between five different distances, from the 5km Couch2Comrades fun run and the 21.1km Comrades Legends Half Marathon all the way up to the gruelling 90km Comrades Legends Ultra.
HOW TO ENTER: RACE THE COMRADES LEGENDS
It costs R150pp for South African runners and $25pp for foreign athletes to enter. Entry is free for all runners who have entered the 2020 Comrades Marathon. Entries close on 14 June 2020. To enter, register online by selecting your distance and filling in your details on the Comrades Marathon entry form.
