Powerful women get in the ring to raise funds and empower other women
African Pride Fighting Championship (APFC) is hosting an all-female fight night on Friday 9 August 2019 in aid of Women’s Month. At the Warrior Womxn event at the hall at 14 Hope Street in Cape Town, everyone is fighting for charity and raising awareness around violence against women.
Husband and wife duo, Mike and Jess Mouneimne of Pride Fighting Academy (PFA) host two charity events a year through APFC. This all-female event will comprise of nine bouts in the martial arts disciplines of Muay Thai, Boxing and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).
MEET THE WARRIOR WOMXN
Co-owner of PFA and APFC, Jess Mouneimne will be stepping into the ring. She is a veteran competitor of the local Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) circuit but this fight will signal her transition to MMA. "I have been wanting to step in the ring for my first MMA fight for years but with raising a family the timing was always off.” Mouneimne is a mom of two, an entrepreneur and is passionate about women's fitness. She teaches women's BJJ, fitness and yoga at PFA. She also runs two 12-week self-defence courses for women a year.
“A few months ago I was challenged by my opponent, Audrey Bekker, to fight, and so the idea of a women's-only charity fight card was born. Not only am I stepping into the ring alongside 17 amazing and fierce women, but we're all doing it to stand up for vulnerable women, a cause so close to all of our hearts.”
There is a great mix of very experienced fighters and a few new fighters who are stepping into the ring for the first time. “In a bid to showcase women’s strength and sensuality, there will be burlesque performances throughout the night as well."

The event takes place in the hall at 14 Hope Street, which will be transformed into a Great Gatsby-style classy affair equipped with a boxing ring.
Burlesque performers will be mingling with the audience all night, and you can expect a showcase of female-owned businesses throughout the venue, plus a gin bar. There will be savoury and sweet food options available as well as a fully-stocked bar, a juice bar and a coffee bar. Street parking is available.
RAISE MONEY FOR KHAYELITSHA HOSPITAL AND RAPE CRISIS
The proceeds from this event will go towards upgrades at the women's psychiatric ward at the Khayelitsha Hospital, as well as Rape Crisis. At the previous APFC event held in Sunningdale on 9 June, the promoter raised R50,000 for the same foundation. The funds were allocated to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) ward of the under-resourced, Khayelitsha Hospital. Over the last five years, African Pride has raised over R300,000 for various charities through combat sports events.
