The Wine Tractor is a unique way to taste wine
Explore hidden wine estates, back roads and see animals
Last updated: Thursday, 7 March 2024
What does one tractor and six wine farms have in common? It’s a charming way to wine hop, where you explore some of Stellenbosch’s oldest and most hidden estates. The Wine Tractor winds its way through back roads with scenes of farms, horses and blue cranes. And you can plan the day to suit your budget (you don’t have to visit all six).

UNIQUE WAY TO DO A WINE TASTING
The Wine Tractor has chosen to spotlight mostly hidden and small farms.
It stops at farms like Peter Falke Wines (sweetly decorated with magenta bougainvillaea, roses, and wild lavender), Longridge Wine Estate (a biodynamic estate that uses live cattle and natural prey instead of pesticides) and Grangehurst Wine Estate, with a wine cellar that was once a squash court.
There’s also three wine estates soon joining the tractor route: Alto, Annandale and Pink Valley Wine Estate.

TOUR THROUGH FARMS & MEET WINEMAKERS
Owner Andrew van Aswegen describes the experience as "a hop on hop-off wine tour on a boujee tractor." Led by a qualified tour guide, the tours are also educational.
You’ll be able to stop at each wine farm, where you can chat to the winemakers and vineyard owners. Another unique detail is that the tractors don’t go through municipal roads, but rather follow farm roads.
This means driving past paddocks, seeing blue cranes and stopping to explore farm barns with horses. Various farms are also child-friendly and have playgrounds and kids treats.

HOW TO BOOK A WINE TRACTOR TOUR
The tour begins at the Wine Tractor offices, located at Eikendal Vineyards. The day starts with a coffee and sweet treat before departing. You can create your own experience by choosing which wine farms you’d like to visit (you don’t have to visit all of them).
The tractors work from Wednesday to Sunday. The first tractor leaves at 9.30am and departs in 40-minute slots until the last tractor returns to Eikendal at 6pm. To avoid disappointment, booking in advance is recommended. Bookings can be made online, directly through the Wine Tractor website.
