Glamorous decor, panoramic seaside views, fine dining and a soundtrack of waves
Casa Labia is now closed.
---
The landmark Casa Labia in Muizenburg, which has up till recently been a restaurant and high-tea destination, now offers two luxury apartments. This national monument has been incorporated into the Ideas Cartel group, which specialises in providing the perfect work-travel-play experience, it has been adapted to ideally suit the digital nomad who loves to work in interesting environments.
There are now two beautifully appointed suites decorated in bold colours and filled with plush details. One is a single room, one has two rooms. Both have all the comforts of a luxury hotel, overlooking views that deliver soft sunsets and gorgeous sunrises. You’ll also go to sleep to the sound of waves.
Those familiar with Muizenberg will know this distinctive building on the mountainside overlooking False Bay. It was built in 1929 by Italian Count Natale Labia as a family home, but also became the official residence of Italy’s diplomatic representative in South Africa (the count was Italy’s first minister plenipotentiary to South Africa). As such, it is a peon to Italy. An interior decorator was brought out from Labia’s home country to decorate the house, and all the fittings are Venetian.
The home is certainly opulent, but the garden within which the house stands is also beautifully landscaped, overlooking the gorgeous bay. And it was here that South African states- and businessmen, as well as academics, came to visit.
Now part of Ideas Cartel, the hotel offers two boardrooms and one co-working space. It is a stylish space with modern desks and high-backed velvet chairs in light, airy rooms filled with greenery. There are large windows looking out onto sea views.
WiFi is uncapped and communal lounges and there’s an upstairs hotdesk area. Booking is made easy with the Ideas Cartel app and clients get discounted rates at the restaurant.
Not only is the Casa Labia itself pretty, so too is its environment. Set on Muizenberg’s Main Road, the Casa is on the hill and overlooks Muizenberg beach, populated with surfers all day. The town itself is steeped in history and loved by art aficionados, so there is plenty to see and do.
Naturally, it is Italian fare that this kitchen offers, although there is also a high tea. Think tomatoes and mozzarella (the real deal), but also locally produced food and with an extensive wine list and gin offering. The menu is seasonal and delicious, and guests can also pre-book a picnic that can be enjoyed on the manicured lawn.
The restaurant transports diners to Venice with its opulent decor. Inside the space, which accommodates up to 26 people, is full of colourful blooms and chandeliers, while big floor-to-ceiling doors open out onto a stylish al fresco dining area that accommodates a further 20 people.
Whether corporate soirées or lavish weddings, the venue at the Casa Labia is the ideal space to host a private function. The picturesque views, the sumptuous fare and the grand aesthetic make any celebration memorable, plus the resident pianist will keep guests entertained into the night.
