Afrikaans Festival at the Cape Town Comedy Club

Some of the country’s top comedians dish out Afrikaans-only humour at this weekend affair

One of the most charming aspects of living in such a diverse multicultural country is our ability to laugh in different languages. One thing South Africans are known for is our sense of humour, and the Afrikaans Festival at the Cape Town Comedy Club promises to be a ‘lag’ a minute.

Due to popular demand after last year's successful show, another Afrikaans Festival will take place from Friday, 3 February until Sunday, 5 February 2017. The weekend affair will feature a stellar line-up of Afrikaans-only comedians, such as Schalk Bezuidenhout, Melt Sieberhagen, Piet Potgieter, Francois van As and Dugald Pieterse. For three days, some of your favourite laugh-generators will amuse, abuse and bemuse with a series of exceptional acts.

Catch traditional-Afrikaans-boy-turned-liberal Schalk Bezuidenhout, with his characteristic on-stage awkwardness and knitted jersey aesthetic. Then have a chuckle at Melt Sieberhagen, of ‘Die Flying Dutchmen’ fame, as he brings the homegrown hilarity to the popular club. You may have seen his face in the Tops@Spar or OLX adverts, but now you will get to guffaw and giggle at his jokes in person. Two-metre-tall funny-man Piet Potgieter will also take to the stage with his funny, witty, unapologetic and in-your-face style of comedy, followed by the comedic musical musings of Francois van As. Tying it all together is the charismatic Dugald Pieterse, who will the be the MC for the festival. Please note that this line-up is subject to change.

As per usual, the Comedy Club will be serving up both ‘snaaks’ and snacks – the club is as much known for its delicious food and drinks as it is for its shows. Be sure to arrive early to enjoy Happy Hour, which runs from 6pm until 7pm and for an hour after the show, with cheap-as-chips drinks specials.
