“Annie are you okay, are you okay, Annie?”
These lyrics from the hit song Smooth Criminal are as synonymous with US rock band Alien Ant Farm as they are with their original writer, King of Pop Michael Jackson. If you were a youth in the late 1990s and early 2000s you’ll likely have gone through your teen and early adult years hearing the sounds of this supergroup. When the rock band released their grungy, high-powered cover of Smooth Criminal back in 2001, it gained the musos lasting recognition and fame across the globe. And now, lo and behold, Alien Ant Farm is coming to perform in South Africa, hitting Durban, Johannesburg and our very own Cape Town this November! The stars of noughties nu-metal will be stirring things up at Mercury Live on Friday, 3 and Saturday, 4 November 2017 as part of their “Ja Well No Fine” South African Tour.
To those of you not familiar with the work of Alien Ant Farm, it would be pretty clear by now that their coming to SA for the first time is a huge deal for fans. Besides the Smooth Criminal smasher, the California-based ouens have released five albums, toured the UK, US, Australia and Japan and been nominated for a Grammy over their career. Not to mention, their music videos were huge on MTV. They’ve even had their music featured in movies like American Pie 2 and Spider Man, and in the video game The Punisher. Some of their other big hits include Movies, S.S Recognise and Nova Hands.
The fact that Mercury Live is going to be overtaken by a massive international band is also significant, given that the popular bar-club usually hosts up-and-coming local acts. For music fans it’s a refreshing change from massive concert arenas that tend to be quite impersonal. Dean Roberts, owner of Middle8, promoters of the tour, says that they aim to bring at least three international acts to South Africa every year. However, he says “rather than push(ing) them into large venues, we want to use smaller, lesser-known venues, allowing fans a more intimate experience”. Could there be a better way to experience Alien Ant Farm than in real life AND up-close?
What’s more, local favourites Made for Broadway and Half Price have been confirmed as the supporting acts for Alien Ant Farm.
