Calling all bookworms! On Monday, 6 November 2017, fans and avid-readers alike will be able to hear from Antjie Krog directly. The award-winning author will be returning to Vineyard Hotel, the site that inspired one of her most famous works; Lady Anne: A Chronicle in Verse for a reading in the hotel’s Terrace Room.
The book itself is based on the life of Lady Anne Barnard, the wife of Andrew Barnard who was, himself, a Colonial Secretary. Together they built the Vineyard Hotel in 1799. Lady Anne’s letters and diaries form the basis of the book. Although an accomplished painter and writer herself, many knew her simply as a socialite of the time. Originally published in Afrikaans, Lady Anne: A Chronicle in Verse has been translated into English for more to enjoy.
Guests will be greeted with a complimentary glass of wine, and, once seated, Antjie Krog will read from her recently translated book which will give the attending audience a rare glimpse into the Cape Colony under British rule.
Antjie Krog is a celebrated South African author and poet. She was born on a farm in the Free State in the early 1950s, and is responsible for some of the best Afrikaans fiction and poetry to come out of our country. Her oeuvre includes works like Country of My Skull which covered the controversies and complications of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The nonfiction novel won the Alan Paton Award and Olive Schreiner Prize the year it was published (1998).
Along with her work as an author and poet, Krog is also an accomplished translator and educator. The Professor of Literature and Philosophy at the University of Western Cape has worked on various novels to translate them between the San language, Afrikaans and English.
