Publik Wine Bar has moved to a new standalone spot with a focus on unusual and interesting wines, paired with charcuterie, cheeses and other bar snacks
Local wine connoisseur and entrepreneur David Cope is mad about local wine.
Enter Publik, his unassuming wine bar that moved location on 9 February 2018 to the bustling corner of Kloofnek Road in Tamboerskloof.
Publik Wine Bar acts as a platform for interesting, unusual varietals – think Cinsault, Riesling, Carignan and Grenache, for example – that customers are unlikely to have had the pleasure of tasting elsewhere. And because so much wine is heavily manipulated today, the focus is also on natural reds, whites and bubblies that have been cultivated sustainably by small-scale farms with minimal intervention.
“It’s important that you can really taste the wine, not just the winemaker’s recipe,” asserts the uber chilled-out David.
The space, which channels a European-style wine bar in both its minimal design and approach, across the road from the Cloud 9 Boutique Hotel & Spa, serves the daily-changing selection of beverages in normal glass tumblers so that the drink itself is pushed to the forefront and not obscured behind pretentious frills and fancy stemware. On the topic of food, a selection of charcuterie and cheeses are available to wash down with your vino, with the bar menu also sporting snacks and classics such as rustic pizza.
In essence, the new Publik is a place you can come learn a little, such as discovering a lesser-known vintage or savouring a Negroni made with local vermouth.
The Bill: Prices are fair but slightly on the upper end of average. A glass of wine goes for R40 and up (all options are available by the glass), and bar tapas range between about R30 and R90.
Opening Hours: Monday – Friday: 4pm – 11pm; Saturday 12pm – 6pm; closed on Sundays.
