The Whisky Library offers tastings, cigars, charcuterie boards + other delights

Looking for a different experience? Step into a modern 1920s-style speakeasy bar where you can taste over 800 whiskies from around the globe and smoke a cigar. The bar also has a food menu, with charcuterie boards and other delicious options.

YOU’LL BE AMAZED AT THE RANGE

The Whisky Library in Durbanville opened its doors in 2020. It was launched by whisky enthusiast and founder Jacques Radyn, as a way for him to share “the art, history and tradition of [whisky]”, he says. His love for the liquor permeates the space.

An impressive display of whisky bottles, their golden contents illuminated by backlights, lines the shelves behind the bar and around the room. Studded leather couches give the feel of an elegant 1920s speakeasy. The whisky collection includes over 800-plus brands from countries including Taiwan, Wales, Sweden, India and others. The Whisky Library also has close on 40 whiskies from The Scotch Malt Whisky Society, an independent bottler, with whom The Whisky Library is partnered.

RECLINE AND ENJOY A WHISKY AND CIGAR

The tasting consists of six different whiskies, chosen according to your taste and budget. “You do not have to spend lots of money to enjoy good whisky,” Jacques explains.

You can choose your own selection or Jacques can create a custom tasting for you. Pair it with an inviting charcuterie board of biltong, crackers, cheese, olives, bread and prosciutto. And you could end it all off with a cigar.

ENJOY THE CASUAL VIBE

While the establishment may sound upmarket, Jacques says it’s just the opposite, “[there’s] no need to dress up, no need to fall in a certain category, just an easygoing place where everybody is welcome,” he explains. “I think most people come back for the whisky, of course, but also for the relaxed atmosphere and the casual conversations.”

Jacques’ vast knowledge about whisky often leaves guests in awe and part of the experience of visiting The Whisky Library is having a conversation with this amicable host, who makes the experience that much richer.

STOP FOR A MEAL AND TOUR THE ART GALLERY

The Rust-en-Vrede Art Gallery & Clay Museum, in Durbanville, is worth visiting and showcases art from well-known as well as up-and-coming artists. The ceramic section includes clay pots and vases made with traditional and contemporary techniques. There are also group exhibitions, such as the Top 40 finalists of 2019’s Sanlam Portrait Awards.

Yoco Eatery is located on site and is a great spot for al fresco dining. Order a hearty farm-style breakfast with cappuccino or a parma ham, mozzarella, honey, cherry tomato and rocket sandwich with a glass of wine for lunch.

JOIN THE MONTHLY TASTINGS

For anyone wishing to find out more about why people are so dedicated to this drink, The Whisky Library hosts more formal monthly tasting experiences for groups of up to 40. Distilleries come to teach guests more about their version of whisky, and what makes it tastes so good.

“It's always a great evening. On those evenings we also serve a 3-course meal to compliment the whiskies we are having on the night,” Jacques says.
