How To Survive Winter in Cape Town

The gloomy weather does not have to limit your activity. Get ideas on what you can do to get through this winter season.

Last Updated: 22 May 2017

The early morning sunrises and late night sunsets are now leaving us temporarily. Mornings will now be dark and cold, and the skies will frown upon us as if to emphasise the misery of not having the sun present. Yes, I am indeed speaking about winter.

The winter season brings out the negativity in Capetonians – often complaining about how they are suffering because of the cold front. When the weather becomes gloomy, you can either choose to wrap yourself in blankets and hibernate, or you can read our guide on how to survive winter in the Mother City.

Dress more, shiver less
We can all agree that the icy days demand a certain dress code. Getting your body covered with a few layers of clothing will be the difference between you shivering out of control and you feeling warm and cosy. You can get some quality winter wear at Mr Price for prices that are not harsh on the budget. So now you may be thinking of what to cover your feet with. Why not try out some factory shops and get yourself a pair of uggs or military boots (which is the in thing now).

Dance the cold away
The summer nights may be gone for now, but should that stop you from having a jol with your friends? Certainly not! You and your mates can increase the body temperature by dancing to some techno beats at Vice City in Buiten Street. That’s certainly a good way to get the temperature up.

Get warm and snugly
The best place may sometimes be indoors with a good movie and a glass of red wine from Boschendal Estate. You might want to add a nice heater (if you don’t have a fireplace) to heat up the room you’re in and make you forget how cold it really is.

Get active, not lazy
Do not allow yourself to be passive and resort to being a couch potato. Get proactive and keep your body and mind healthy by having a regular workout routine. This can boost your immune system and help you fight off colds and flu that are associated with the winter season.

Winter has no chill (no pun intended) but that shouldn’t ruin it for you. As long as you get your friends to agree to some activities, you should be able to see this cold season through.
