Farewell and good luck to our spectacular Mother City atheletes
Last Update: 31 August 2016
Last week we welcomed home the Mother City’s incredible Olympic Games athletes, and this week it’s time to bid farewell to our extraordinary paralympic athletes as they head to Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 Paralympics Games.
Team South Africa comprises 45 athletes across all sporting divisions. The Western Cape’s Paralympians make up 40% of Team SA, with 18 athletes calling the province home.
“The Paralympians hailing from the Western Cape have always done us proud at the Games. There is no doubt in my mind that they are well prepared to compete against the rest of the world and bring the gold back home,” said the Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais.
“Our Paralympians are exceptional examples to all South Africans. Despite the many challenges they face on a daily basis, their will to excel has afforded them the golden opportunity to represent our country at the world’s most esteemed sporting event”.

This morning, our athletes were bid a warm farewell as a jovial crowd gathered at the entrance of the Cape Town International Airport to wish them luck.
In conclusion, Marias stated that she’s proud that the bulk of the South African team comes from the Western Cape: “It’s so wonderful to be here and to see off our team. We are very proud of them because they excelled above their circumstances. We know that they will bring back the gold.”
The 2016 Paralympics Games is scheduled to take place in Rio de Janeiro from the 7th to the 18th of September. All the best to our athletes in their pursuit of gold, silver and bronze!
