Blisters for Bread Fun Walk

Don your walking shoes for a good cause and help feed a hungry child

Blisters for Bread, one of Cape Town’s favourite charity events, is back on the social responsibility calendar for its 48th year. This annual fun walk calls on Mother City residents to take to the streets for a worthy cause on Sunday, 27 August 2017.

As with previous events, the philanthropic happening supports the Peninsula School Feeding Association (PSFA), a non-profit organisation that addresses the fact that three out of four children in the Western Cape go to school hungry every day. Established in 1958, PSFA endeavours to feed these hungry children at both primary and secondary school levels.

Started by the staff and students from Savio College in Lansdowne in 1968, the fun walk was initiated to raise much-needed financial support for the association’s school feeding scheme. With the first few walks being successful, PSFA took ownership of the yearly trot and thus started spearheading what is now known as Blisters for Bread. PSFA believes that “you can’t teach a hungry child”, and today the organisation feeds up to 28 000 children in 155 schools every day – for most, it is the only meal they get.

On the day, you’ll be treated to a performance from Four, recent winners of the X-Factor SA.

HOW THE BLISTERS FOR BREAD FUN WALK WORKS

For only R50p/p (an amount that will feed 20 children), participants can take part in either a 10km run or a 5km walk.

Walk numbers for participants must be collected from Sportsmans Warehouse branches in Rondebosch, Canal Walk, Tyger Valley or Sea Point on Saturday, 26 August 2017 between  9am and  5pm.

On the day, all walkers are to meet inside the Green Point Cricket Club in front of the stage, prior to the designated start times: the 10km walk starts at 7:30am and the 5km walk starts at 8am.

For the safety of all participants, professional medical facilities will be stationed  along the route and at the finish line. Additionally, if you’d like to stow away your tog bag, a lock-up area is offered. Please note though that all items are stored at your own risk.

ROUTE DIRECTIONS FOR THE 2017 BLISTERS FOR BREAD FUN WALK

The two walks start at the same location at the Green Point Cricket Club in Vlei Road. The route then moves along the Mouille Point and Sea Point promenades towards Camps Bay; walkers return to the Green Point Cricket Club via the same route that they took. Refreshment stations are located along the way.
