2018 marks the 10th anniversary of the Zando Cape Town 10s, a sporting event featuring rugby, volleyball, dodgeball and more. From Thursday, 1 to Saturday, 3 February all this action is taking place at Hamiltons Rugby Club in Green Point. It’s a social and lifestyle sporting event you don’t want to miss.
What started as a fun rugby tournament by legends of the game Bob Skinstad and Robbie Fleck (and their mate Ron Rutland), the Zando Cape Town 10s has evolved into so much more. Besides the rugby, netball, dodgeball and volleyball we’re already familiar with, this year you can also join in on a game of hockey, 5s soccer, running and touch rugby.
THE ENTRY PROCESS
In each category you can either enter as an individual (this is not applicable to all sports) or as a team. And this is how it works:
10s Rugby: This is a social event catered to non-professionals to compete in a sport they love and enjoy. What’s more, if you are a bit older you can still join in on the action. The game is divided into four divisions, namely masters, vets, premier and social.
The format: A team consists of 20 players. Ten of these players need to be on the field at all times (usually five forwards and five backs). Games last about 18 minutes with a 2-minute half-time after 9 minutes of gameplay.
Entry fee: R34 000 per team of 20 people
Netball: When netball was introduced to the Zando 10s in 2014, there were only 40 teams competing and this year that total has climbed to 80. Netball games are played on grass-based courts. The games are divided into three divisions; masters, premier and social.
The format: A team consists of 10 players with 7 players on the court at all times. Games last about 20 minutes with a 2-minute half-time after 10 minutes of gameplay.
Entry fee: R10 000 per team of 10 people
Dodgeball: For the second year running you have to duck and dive if you want to dodge a ball. So get ready to break a sweat with this childhood classic.
The format: A team consists of 7 male and female players on the court at all times. Up to 2 substitutes are allowed with only 5 on the court.
Entry fee: R4 550 per team of 7 people
5-a-side soccer: This is first time 5-a-side soccer is being played at the Zando 10s. Enter either the social or the premier divisions. Games are played on grass-based courts.
The format: A team consists of males only and have 10 players with 5 players on the court at all times. Games last about 20 minutes with a 2-minute half-time after 10 minutes of gameplay.
Entry fee: R4 000 per team of 10 people, excluding the kit or R7 000 per team of 10 people including the kit.
Hockey: Another new addition to this social sporting event is hockey. You can enter in either the social or premier divisions. Games are played on grass-based courts.
The format: A team must be a mix of male and female at all times. A team consists of 10 players with 5 players on the court at all times. Games last about 20 minutes with a 2-minute half-time after 10 minutes of gameplay.
Entry fee: R4 000 per team of 10 people, excluding the kit or R7 000 per team of 10 people including the kit.
Beach volleyball: For the third year running, the ever-popular beach volleyball is back. Enter in either the social or premier divisions.
The format: A team consists of 8 male and female players. You are allowed up to 8 substitutes with only 5 on the court at a time.
Entry fee: R5 200 per team of 8 people
Touch rugby: Another great addition to this already awesome event is touch rugby. This is a league game with every team competing for the title of champions.
The format: Teams can be a mix of male and female. A team must consist of 12 players with 6 players on the field at all times. Games last about 20 minutes with a 2-minute half-time after 10 minutes of gameplay.
Entry fee: R4 800 per team of 12 people
Fittest in Cape Town: Fitness in Cape Town is an organisation that aims to gather the best individual and team athletes in Southern Africa. Fitness in Cape Town is well known for testing fitness. So show your support for the athletes.
Entry: Sold out
*All entry fees include a weekend pass to the event, live entertainment, vouchers, a kit and massage and strapping services. Tickets are available via Quicket.co.za
