MyCiti |
The lowdown on the MyCiTi bus routes, schedule and ticket prices
A reliable, effective and safe transport system in Cape Town WAS a long time coming. Prior to the 2011 roll-out of the MyCiTi bus network, sitting like sardines in a cramped minibus taxi or spending a fortune on meter cabs was the norm.
And though these uncomfortable, unsafe and uneconomical options are still current realities for many, the MyCiTi initiative has made huge headway in paving the path toward a stress-free, secure and affordable means of travel.
For those new to South Africa or the wonderful world of public transport, whether you’re on your way to or from the airport, commuting between particular outer suburbs and the city centre or trying to get from point A to point B within the CBD, there’s bound to be a dependable and cost-effective MyCiTi bus route that can get you there on time.
Though, do keep in mind that, with the exception of the routes to and from the airport, you’ll need a myconnect card to travel aboard the MyCiTi bus. These cost a once-off fee of R35 and are available from appointed kiosks and participating retailers (for more info visit the MyCiTi website or call +27 (0) 800 65 64 63); after purchasing, it’s simply necessary to begin loading money onto the card to travel (fares are calculated on a distance-travelled basis and depend on whether you’re travelling at peak or off-peak times). Children under four years of age can ride the MyCiTi for free.
Recent Developments: On 1 November 2014, the MyCiTi kiosk operating hours changed and underutilised kiosks were closed (see the website for specifics). In addition, 2014 saw the launch of a new route linking passengers to the lower cable car station at Table Mountain as well as the opening of the N2 Express routes, the first of many pathways designed to connect the areas of Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha with central Cape Town. Not to mention, a number of lanes have also been launched to link the West Coast town of Atlantis with Melkbosstrand, Omuramba and various other nearby areas.
---
D01 KHAYELITSHA EAST – CIVIC CENTRE
This main service is meant to zip residents of Khayelitsha East to and from Cape Town central. The route starts at the Kuyasa Rail Station in Mandela Park and whisks passengers down Lindela Road, along Jeff Masemola Road, onto Spine Road and then into town via the N2 (it returns along the same path). There are only a few stops along the way, and these include the Vuyani Taxi Rank, Charles Mokoena, Steve Biko, D Nyembe, Tutu, Dibana and Lindela.

The route starts just off Third Avenue and runs down AZ Berman Drive, along the Cape Flats Road and onto the N2, before ending its journey at the Civic Centre and returning along the same path. Do note, the bus does not stop when travelling from Mitchells Plain to town, but does make drop-offs at Sesame, Marguerite, Kerrem and Pontiac when going from the city centre back to Mitchells Plain.

A dedicated MyCiTi bus lane connects Usasaza station near Dunoon and the V&A Waterfront via Table View and the Civic Centre, making for fast and stress-free travel from the outskirts to the city centre. Similarly, another key route has been added between Atlantis, Table View and Omuramba. Extending out from these main drags, there are also seven different area routes designed to connect people living in Big Bay, Parklands, Sunningdale, West Beach, Duynefontein and Melkbosstrand. A01 AIRPORT – CIVIC CENTRE – V&A WATERFRONT ROUTE
This route has revolutionised getting to and from the Cape Town International Airport, and now includes a leg that extends between the city centre and the V&A Waterfront. The collection point for passengers travelling from the Civic Centre to the airport is situated right outside the Civic Centre in Hertzog Boulevard (Platform 1), and the MyCiTi will drop you off right outside the airport’s terminal building. You can catch the bus at exactly the same point on the transport plaza when travelling from the airport to the Civic Centre or on to the V&A Waterfront. The collection and drop-off point at the Waterfront is the appointed MyCiTi stop.

110 TABLE MOUNTAIN
Launched to improve public access to Cape Town’s most iconic landmark and to reduce congestion around its base, the Table Mountain route runs from a point at the intersection of Kloof Nek and Tafelberg roads up to the lower cableway station and back again. While for most of the day, the bus simply moves between these two points, the very first and very last bus travel directly from and to the Civic Centre. Currently, to get there, it’s necessary for passengers to use a service that goes via Kloof Nek (route 106 or 107) and to then disembark and transfer to the Table Mountain route to reach the cable car – they will only be charged a single fare though.

Future MyCiTi routes
In late 2014, the West Coast can expect several new bus routes. Such developments will link Atlantis with the Civic Centre and Century City via Table View and will also connect Atlantis with the nearby suburbs of Mamre, Pella, Robinvale and Witsands. In addition, in the future, a new phase of development will see the launch of the Lansdowne/ Wetton Corridor, which will connect 35 communities between the metro south-east and the Southern Suburbs, including those from Nyanga, Philippi, Khayelitsha, Gugulethu, Ottery, Plumstead, Wynberg, Rondebosch, Kenilworth, Claremont and several other suburbs. Construction of this corridor will begin in mid-2015 and should hopefully be completed by 2020.
MyCiTi bus fares
Though initially marginally more expensive than taking a minibus taxi or train, travelling via the MyCiTi bus is now not only more efficient and much safer, but also more cost-effective.
It is important to note that MyCiTi is a cashless system, except for the airport route, for which paper tickets can still be bought. For all other routes, you will have to load money onto a myconnect card, which can be purchased at MyCiTi station kiosks and participating retailers for R35 (note: on 1 November 2014, kiosk operating hours changes and underused kiosks were closed – check the MyCiTi website for details). Kids under the age of four travel for free, as does anyone who’s less than one metre tall.
Do note, as of August 2013, MyCiTi fares are charged on a distance-travelled basis and vary depending on whether you travel during peak or off-peak periods.
Cleanliness is holiness
The stations, buses and bus stops are maintained with the utmost care and integrity.
Each bus stop is enclosed by glass walls, providing passengers with suitable protection against the unpredictable Cape Town weather.
Security guards ensure the safety of passengers both on the buses and in the stations. Every station has a check point at the entrance, and no one is admitted without a valid ticket.
The City of Cape Town has gone the extra mile to ensure the efficient transport of its people; though, while ‘the bus for us’ has considerably narrowed the playing field between South African and international transport standards, it still has some way to go.
