City Soirée Art Exhibition: Kate Arthur’s Doodles
Help bring this crowdfunded showcase to life and come away with a personalised work of art and a great night out
Kickstarter changed the way millions of Americans connected with artists, Thundafund’s done the same in South Africa and now City Soirée, a Cape Town-based venture that brings together creatives and audiences in unconventional spaces, is taking the crowdfunding model one step further with its Drawingrooms series.
The organisation’s collection of innovative events calls on average Joes and Janes to become not just once-off financiers, but rather patrons of the arts by sponsoring and attending an actual once-off secret exhibition.
The next event is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, 27 November 2014 at a mysterious location in Woodstock and, if it comes to fruition, will feature up-and-coming artist Kate Arthur’s quirky pen-and-watercolour portraiture. As a bonus, CocoáFair, Africa’s only organic bean-to-bar chocolate factory, will be doing a chocolate tasting – SWEET!
How Do City Soirée’s Drawingrooms Exhibitions Work?
To make the pop-up exhibition a reality and to give a platform to Arthur’s slice-of-life drawings, 40 people must pledge R100p/p before the pledge closing date of Wednesday, 19 November 2014. In return, those who make a pledge get guaranteed entry to the event, a limited edition hand-made postcard by the artist before the event as well as the chance to win an artwork of their choice to the value of R4000 (one pledge name is pulled in a lucky draw at the end of the event).
Here’s the catch – the event only becomes a reality and donors only stand a chance to come away with a personalised work once the pledge target is reached. If enough fans hop on board, the event location and all relevant details will be revealed to pledges in an email. In some cases, the affair is then also opened to the public, but at this point tickets are sold at a higher rate.
If the target is not reached, everyone gets refunded in full.
About Kate Arthur
Kate Arthur moved to the Mother City in early 2014, shortly before she started her pen-and-watercolour series of ‘doodles’, which she describes as “frustrated, meticulous and sentimental”. The collection combines principles of portraiture and figure drawing, and Kate sources her subject matter through Instagram – sometimes selecting her own photos and other times using those of her friends and followers.
