Last updated: Tuesday, 7 February 2025

These charming cottages in a secluded Cederberg valley have hot tubs in the garden, full kitchens, and large wrap-around verandas with rocky mountain views. And the best part? You and your friends can book out the whole retreat and have it all to yourself. Especially with our CapeTownMagazine.com reader special where you can book for four people for the price of two.

CEDERKLOOF BOTANICAL RETREAT

Part of a 270 hectare citrus farm, Cederkloof Botanical Retreat lies in a gorgeous valley that drops down to the banks of the Olifants River. It falls within the Cederberg mountain wilderness area, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2004.

Every corner of the retreat invites you to slow down. You can hike through fynbos on two different trails, lounge by the pool, go for a plunge in the nearby rock pool or gather around the fire in the evenings.

The sprawling property is also abundant with wildlife like duiker, steenbok, muskeljaatkat, baboons and leopards. Through the peaceful silence, you can hear the chattering of over 125 bird species like blue cranes and sugarbirds, and the low hum of dragonflies and butterflies.

10 COSY COTTAGES IN CITRUSDAL

While Cederkloof might feel like a remote wilderness, the cottages feel cosy and homely. There are 10 self-catering cottages, six bachelor-style and four two-bedrooms.

All the cottages have king-size beds, en-suite bathrooms, aircon, and DSTV. Large windows let in plenty of natural light, allowing you to gaze out at the valley below (the cottages are dotted along the valley's edge).

The water, flowing from a natural spring at 29 degrees Celsius, is especially delightful.

Each cottage has wifi and a generator, in case of power cuts. Image: Cederkloof Botanical Retreat

YOU CAN HOST A PRIVATE PARTY

If you’re booking the entire property, Opstal (the main house) becomes your central gathering space. It has five bedrooms sleeping 10 people, a built-in bar, and a large lounge that opens onto a wrap-around veranda.

With the twinkling lights hanging from the ceiling, it’s a beautiful spot to throw a weekend birthday party or even host a wedding.

Additional guests can stay in the fairy tale bell tents in the forest. Each tent has a double bed, carpet, bedside lights, electricity and is close to outdoor showers.
