Wah gwaan fellow rastas and reggae lovers, if you’re looking for your fix of calypso and Caribbean-style music then cease and sekkle – the first annual Africa Unite Reggae Sunsplash takes place at the YMCA in Strandfontein on Friday, 23 and Saturday, 24 September 2016. What better way to celebrate Heritage Day than with music from local artists!
This is the first festival of its kind on African soil that features artists, DJs and live bands from around the continent, and is proudly presented by the Rastafari United Front (RUF) and Bantu Media. These two organisations have teamed up and established an initiative to build social cohesion and permanently eradicate xenophobia by bringing together musicians and artists from around Africa in a vibrant and diverse showcase of talent.
The weapon of choice to tackle xenophobia and promote nation building is reggae and African traditional music. The likes of Bob Marley and Lucky Dube have shown that reggae music can be used to create positive awareness and inspire change through powerful lyrics and soulful melodies. Everyone is invited to breathe easy at this celebration and nice up the dance to the reggae beats by getting into the island groove.
As with many music festivals around the country, food and refreshments will be sold at the venue to keep bredren and sistren hydrated and energised so that they can keep on jammin’ late into the night. Alcohol will not be sold, however, and is not prohibited at the venue.
Jah man. One love.
