Be a part of this historic event and join the African Centurion Walk through Robben Island from Saturday, 22 October to Sunday, 23 October 2016 to celebrate freedom in South Africa and raise funds for the elderly.
The African Centurion Walk is taking place for the first time through Robben Island, the iconic isle that housed Nelson Mandela and other imprisoned activists during apartheid. This incredible experience will give participants an opportunity to earn a Centurion walker number and spend a night on the most famous island in Southern Africa.
This extraordinary walk is 100 miles long (approximately 160-km) and takes place over 24 hours. The route will include a 10-km stretch along the Atlantic coastline and through picturesque locations in Robben Island, followed by a 4.7-km loop through forest areas and the housing village. Most of the route will take place on flat, tarred ground but there will be short section on a gravelled terrain and a slight incline. Participants have the option of signing up as a solo walker, as part of a relay team or as a spectator. Relay runners can split the distance depending on their individual skill levels.
Rest areas will be provided in the main event area and participants are encouraged to bring a space blanket, headlamp, sunscreen and clothing for warm and cold weather. There will be water points and first aid assistance along the course as well as massage stations, food and plenty of entertainment over the course of the event to keep guests happy. All participants are invited to enjoy a tour of the renowned Robben Island prison complex before the race begins.
Proceeds from the walk will go to Abbeyfield South Africa, an organisation that provides support and accommodation to the elderly. Abbeyfield currently provides safe, affordable lodgings in 18 houses across the Western Cape and they are looking to expand this project to previously disadvantaged areas.
