Inventive small plates best explored with a wine pairing
It seems that Canadian punk rockers Billy Talent can’t get enough of Mzansi, because they are back on our shores for a one-night concert in Cape Town at the City Hall Auditorium on Friday, 23 August 2013 before heading to Pretoria the following evening.
Originally keen to play at this year’s Oppikoppi Bewilderbeast Festival after successfully headlining the 2010 event, the band, who produced hits like ‘Fallen Leaf’ and ‘Surrender’, couldn’t make the outdoor music jam, but still wanted to give South African listeners a chance to hear songs from their latest album, “Dead Silence”, live. The special two-leg detour comes just before Billy Talent heads to Europe, where they will headline three festivals, and offers fans a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with the four-piece group.
Billy Talent’s raw, angst-y self-titled album was released in 2003, but it was the follow up, “Billy Talent II” that produced the band’s signature sound, propelled them on a world tour and won them many fans as they electrified global stages. By the time that their next record, “Billy Talent III”, came out, the band was headlining major festivals in the UK, Australia and South Africa (2010’s Oppikoppi).
The act’s recently released 2012 album features the singles ‘Viking Death March’ and ‘Surprise Surprise’, which both contain the shredding guitars and melodic vocal harmonising that have come to signify their music.
