Hordes of runners are set to take off from the starting line of one of Cape Town’s most popular half marathons and fun run races this October. The 2017 Gun Run invites runners (of varying degrees of fitness) to race through the streets of the Mother City, along the Sea Point Promenade and around Camps Bay as part of one of three fast, flat races on Sunday, 8 October 2017.
Since its inauguration in 1993, the Gun Run has become a firm favourite on the sporting calendar. Runners can participate in either the half-marathon (21.1km), the 10km or the 5km race. This year the races will start on Beach Road, Mouille Point, and end on the field of the Hamilton’s Rugby Club on Vlei Road. To ease the congestion, the starting times are staggered so the half marathon starts at 6:30am, the 10km race at 7:30am and the 5km fun run at 8:30am . As is tradition, the Cape Field Artillery will signal the end of the event with the firing of the battlefield gun at 10am.
Aside from the more active running activities, a host of entertainment is scheduled for the day, most of which will revolve around the KFM music stage. Food and drink vendors will also be on site to satiate any appetite runners (or supporting friends and family members) may have worked up. What’s more, athletes are encouraged to stay after the race for the prize giving and lucky draw; all the participants stand a chance of winning a purse of R10 000 in cash!
