Carlos Santana Concerts in Cape Town
The smooth guitar legend presents four decades’ worth of Latin-infused rock for the first time in the Mother City
Cape Town dwellers, be prepared to have your ears and minds blown by one of the greatest guitarists in rock ‘n’ roll history, Carlos Santana. The famous performer is gearing up to put on a series of explosive concerts at GrandWest’s Grand Arena on Tuesday, 25; Wednesday, 26; and Thursday, 27 February 2014. He was not originally scheduled to play the last date, but it was added on in response to the overwhelming demand for tickets.
And it’s really no surprise that local fans were clamouring for a chance to catch the legendary Grammy Award-winning musician in the flesh, as it’s the first time in his impressive 45-year career that he will perform in South Africa. Though he earned himself a permanent place in pop culture history as one of the acts who performed at the original Woodstock festival in 1969, the Mexican-born guitar hero is most famous for his 1999 album Supernatural, which featured the number one single ‘Smooth’(co-written and sung by Rob Thomas) and earned the Latin-rock shaman nine Grammy Awards, including one for Album of the Year.
Santana and his band, which has had a rotating line-up of members since its inception in the late 60s, pioneered a unique sound that combined bluesy, rock guitar melodies with spicy Latin and African rhythms. And this signature style has been consistently popular enough to make the artist a solid fixture on the Billboard charts for four straight decades. True to form, Santana is set to release another album this year called Corazon, which is a star-studded record featuring the likes of Gloria Estefan, Pitbull and Ziggy Marley.
In the meantime, Mzansi’s rock fans can delight in listening to many of the old classics delivered live and loud at what is bound to be a supremely spectacular show.
