Charl ‘Babyboy’ Pilwan will be making an impromptu final appearance in his hometown to finish off a successful South African visit before his return to Macau, China. The unplugged Cape Town gig, which comes as a result of locals reaching out to Babyboy, asking to see him live before he departs, will take place at the River Club in Observatory on Friday, 20 March 2015.
Pilwan’s journey is a musical success story that began in the Mother City’s own backyard. The R&B muso grew up in Retreat, but moved to England to finish his schooling overseas. When he started his musical career he was sleeping on park benches in Surrey, but his fortunes were to change when he managed to convince the manager of a London nightclub to let him on stage for a night. By 2003 he was performing in hotels and nightclubs in Bahrain and Dubai, and in 2005, he became part of a boyband called the Shiok Crew – they would go on to become one of the biggest names in Asia.
Later, and thanks to his ability to speak 10 different languages, Babyboy took his career to the next level and started producing with Asian artist Jun Kung. According to his manager, Roshan Philander, he has since produced music for famous Chinese actor-singer Terence Yin, handsome South Korean performer Rain and American rapper MC Jin.
Despite his international successes, Babyboy still feels his roots strongly in Cape Town and has been working hard to make in-roads in the local music industry. In fact, his recent single ‘Apple Green Datsun’, which is a collaboration with Afrikaans rapper Die Barheid and is named after his older brother’s car, is all about missing home.
Another recent single, ‘Voice of Reason’ pays tribute to his mother, and the music video was shot in both Cape Town and Hong Kong.
Wanting to re-establish himself in Cape Town so he can work here on a regular basis, this has been the first time in 13 years that Babyboy has performed live during one of his visits home.
