E.T.A Hoffman’s Coppélia has been enthralling and entertaining audiences since 1870, and now the timeless classic is set to once again take to the stage of the Artscape Opera House from Wednesday, 25 May until Sunday, 29 May 2016.
Originally choreographed by Arthur Saint-Léon and set to the music of Léo Delibes, the ballet was written by French librettist Charles Nuitter, who drew strong inspiration from two of E. T. A Hoffman’s stories, “The Sandman” and “The Doll”.
The story features the likes of an inventor (read nutty professor), Dr Coppelius, who creates a life-like dancing doll who, Franz – a country lad – falls madly in love with, despite being engaged to his sweetheart, Swanhilde. After much misdirection, magic spells and mechanical dolls, the pair eventually marry and the (diabolical) doctor joins in the festive merriment as the town celebrates their union.
Directed by Professor Elizabeth Triegaardt, former director of the UCT School of Dance, and with choreography after David Poole, the comic ballet offers an entertaining show for all ages. With equal doses of romance, intrigue and covert actions, audiences can look forward to being transported into a world of witchcraft, folklore and, ultimately, happy endings.
