Easter weekend isn’t just a time to stuff your face with chocolate (because who needs a special weekend to do that anyway?). Easter is also about spending quality time with family and friends. So best you gather yours and make a plan to get down to Spier Wine Farm in Stellenbosch for the most egg-citing Easter weekend ever.
Spier has a weekend absolutely jam-packed with fun activities for the whole family, starting on Friday, 25 and running until Sunday, 27 March. Look forward to an Easter market, an Easter egg hunt and more eating and drinking than you can reasonably imagine!
Take your pick of great things to do on this long weekend.
EASTER WEEKEND AT SPIER WINE FARM IN STELLENBOSCH
GOOD FRIDAY, 25 MARCH:
Good Friday Lunch at Eight Restaurant:
Start your Easter weekend with a delicious à là carte lunch at Spier’s Eight Restaurant. Not only will Easter favourites like pickled fish be available, but a whole host of other yummy, fresh and seasonal treats will be on offer for you and your loved ones to enjoy. The lunch session starts at 12pm and costs R280p/p for adults and R140p/p for children. To make a booking, email the restaurant at eight@spier.co.za.
Good Friday Dinner at Spier Hotel Restaurant:
Friday afternoon a little too early to get to Stellenbosch? That’s no problem at all because the people at Spier Hotel Restaurant are hosting a Good Friday Dinner, which starts at 6:30pm. Look forward to roasted sweet potato salad and traditional fish for starters, with mains options that include roast chicken and leek pie, and pasture-reared Farmer Angus beef roast with Madagascan pepper sauce, beautifully complemented with a Spier Shiraz. If you aren’t convinced yet, the dessert of chocolate mousse with vermicelli and chocolate eggs should definitely do it for you. Concerned about all that chocolate? There is also a platter of fresh and delicious local fruit to enjoy. Dinner costs R280p/p for adults and R140p/p for children. If you would like to make a booking, please email aldrinel@spier.co.za.
SATURDAY, 26 MARCH:
Easter Werf Market:
This holiday-themed market is going to be filled with special Easter goodies, and baskets full of chocolate eggs. Spier like to mix up the vendors at their markets so that they match with the theme of the occasion, so look forward to all things Easter! The market starts at 9am and there will be a host of activities for the little ones, as well as lots of stalls for the adults to browse. On the activity line-up for the day there’s an Easter egg for the kids and some interesting secret workshops… Entrance to the market entrance is free but select activities, such as the egg hunt and workshops, carry a cost so please check their website for prices and booking details.
The products at the market will no doubt be unique and limited, so it’s an opportunity to immerse yourself in creativity as you meander around the lawns, wine glass in hand (or a signature craft cocktail) of course!
If that’s not enough, there will also be interactive workshops for adults to enjoy, such as cooking classes, flower arranging lessons and a short course in ice cream making. Now there is really no excuse. As with the kids workshops, make sure to book your spot via Quicket.co.za.
The Easter Werf Market will also be open on SUNDAY, 27 MARCH from 10am.
Braai at Spier Hotel Restaurant:
Celebrate Easter in an authentically South African way when you join in the fun at Spier Hotel Restaurant for an evening braai. Starting at 6:30pm, there will be plenty of time to relax with a glass of wine and enjoy the natural delights of the estate. As with any traditional SA braai, there will be meat galore, including spatchcock chicken with a honey mustard dressing, and whole Karoo lamb straight off the spit. There will also be assorted salads, flat breads and a sticky chocolate pudding with caramel sauce for dessert. The braai is R280p/p for adults (excluding drinks and gratuity), and R140p/p for children. If you’re keen, and want to guarantee your family a reservation, drop Spier an email at aldrinel@spier.co.za.
Drive-In Film: The Grand Budapest Hotel
While The Grand Budapest Hotel isn’t exactly an Easter film, it is a classic and very few will have seen it at a drive-in showing. Follow the trials and tribulations of Zero and Mr Gustave as they go from workers at the world’s best hotel to semi-detectives determined to find the murderer of one of Mr Gustave’s nearest and dearest, kind of. Bring three of the film buffs in your life along to enjoy this hilarious Academy Award-winning film. Tickets are charged per car (4 people) at R250. Regrettably, no picnics may be brought to the feature, but the Eight to Go Deli will be open until 8pm, which gives you enough time to load up on yummies to get you through the film. Alternatively, you can pre-order a snack basket for two at R180 per basket, which includes homemade dark chocolate brownies, sesame caramel nuts, free range biltong and more. Picnic collection is between 5pm and 7pm, with the film starting at 8pm. Make sure you reserve your place by booking at Webtickets.co.za.
EASTER SUNDAY, 27 MARCH:
Easter Sunday Family Lunch:
Hosted at the Old Wine Cellar, this is the event for feeding your inner foodie. Easter Sunday lunch is always a big deal and Spier understand that. Join the celebrations and feast on a very impressive Easter spread. To kick off the meal there will be fresh hot cross buns and home-baked breads with assorted pâtés, butter, cheese, and fresh fruits. The main attraction invites you in with a yoghurt-roasted lamb shoulder and a potato and mushroom bake to accompany it. Dessert wouldn’t be dessert without chocolate, so there’s that which will come in the form of double chocolate brownies served with strawberry compote and whipped cream. But there is also a wonderful banana pudding with star anise custard. Bring the whole family along and celebrate Easter with good food amidst a spectacular setting. Book soon by emailing aldrinel@spier.ca.za. The meal costs R350p/p for adults (excluding drinks and gratuity) and R150p/p for children.
Easter Lunch at Eight Restaurant:
This farm-to-table celebratory meal is a showcase of the best farm produce in the Stellenbosch area, with all the ingredients either grown at Spier, or locally sourced from farms in the area. The starter selection includes pickled fish, olives, hummus, salsa, freshly baked bread, beans, red onion and grilled peppers. On offer for the main course is sustainable fish, crispy roast pork belly and Farmer Angus chicken. A poached pear, vanilla panna cotta and almond shortbread rounds off this already scrumptious meal. Interested? Make sure to book your place by emailing eight@spier.ca.za. Tickets cost R300p/p for adults (excluding drinks and gratuity), and R150p/p for children.
Remember that the Easter Werf Market will be open again on Sunday, 27 March, so don’t miss out on all the limited Easter yumminess!
Spier has it all this Easter weekend; markets, fresh produce, craft cocktails, amazing desserts, scrumptious savouries, a fabulous film, delicious food and, of course, award-winning wines.
