Classical music and ballet enthusiasts will be delighted to hear that the renowned production Giselle will be pirouetting onto stage at the Artscape Opera House from Friday, 25 September to Sunday, 4 October 2015.
Giselle is a romantic ballet that tells the tragic story of a young peasant girl (named Giselle) who goes insane after she discovers that her lover is set to marry another woman. Her broken heart eventually leads to her death, but a group of supernatural beings (called The Wilis), who dance men to death, resurrect Giselle from her grave. They target the title character’s lover in a bid to kill him, but Giselle’s love for him frees him from their clutches.
This classical ballet piece was first performed in Paris in 1841 by the Ballet du Théâtre de l’Académie Royale de Musique (the Ballet Theatre of the Royal Academy of Music), with Italian ballerina Carlotta Grisi playing the famous role for 8 years in a row. Since the debut triumph, the ballet has been revived and re-worked countless times across the globe.
The Cape Town incarnation features a corps de ballet of note and guest artists Hikaru Kobayashi and Federico Bonelli from the British Royal Ballet at selected performances. All the performances (except two) will be accompanied by the enchanting Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Graham Scott. With such a talented cast and top-class soundtrack, this ballet is worth being marked in your calendar.
