Jazz on the Rocks

Gear up for a lekker time along the West Coast at this beloved beachside festival featuring top musical acts

Jazz music lovers are gearing up for the trek to the pristine Cape Columbine Nature Reserve’s Tietiesbaai beach, just outside Paternoster, for the 2016 Jazz on the Rocks outdoor music festival from Thursday, 25 to Sunday, 28 February 2016.

The oceanfront live music fair – it’s only a 90-minute drive from Cape Town city – merges sun, sea and soulful sounds to make for a four-day celebration jam-packed with an extended international line-up, family fun in the sun, West Coast hospitality and postcard-perfect panoramas.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE 2016 JAZZ ON THE ROCKS MUSIC FESTIVAL AT TIETIESBAAI IN PATERNOSTER

ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC: As always, the seaside jazz fest is all about the music and showcases some of Mzansi’s best loved and up-and-coming performers as well as a handful of international acts. Running for the sixth year, audiences can look forward saxophonist Jay Beckenstein of Spyro Gyra (USA), Marion Meadows (USA) and British saxophonist Andrew Young who performs every year due to public demand.

A UNIQUE SETTING: What makes this marvellous maritime musical jol an experience to remember is the fact that the stage is securely built on the rocks and boulders of the quaint Tietiesbaai beach, overlooking the sparkling Atlantic below!

WEST COAST CULTURE: While the live music is the obvious highlight, the festival also celebrates the culture of this West Coast dorpie. The to-do boasts a wide selection of food stalls selling local cuisine, and the popular Tietie Bar, which is stationed on the strand, promises to keep those thirsts quenched all weekend long. As a family-friendly event, the fair offers a range of activities, including beach games and much more, to keep the little ones entertained.

CAMPING: The Cape Columbine Nature Reserve is a pocket of undisturbed natural beauty that perfectly captures the essence of the West Coast. As part of its duty as the host venue for the jazz do each year, the reserve opens its gates to eager party-goers keen to set up a temporary home base in this secluded setting. Festival-goers can rough it cowboy style and pitch their own tents. Do note, even though patrons are allowed to bring food, drinks and braai facilities to the camp area, the rules remain steadfast: be kind to the environment and your fellow revellers. As part of the festival’s “Too Precious to Pollute” campaign, overnighters are encouraged to take their dirt with them when leaving the campsite, and NO glass will be allowed in the camping areas or on the beach (decant your drinks). Note that the gates to the camping area close one hour after the last performance, and party-goers who have booked in advance are welcome to camp out until Monday morning before hitting the road home.

SAFETY FIRST: The yearly shindig has teamed up with safety organisations like the South African Police Services, Disaster Management and the festival’s very own life-savers to maintain its reputation as a safe and incident-free jol.
