Kuier@TheCastle – the Saturday outdoor market unpacked

10 great reasons to go, like Thrift Fest & spring workshops

Last updated: 22 October 2024

Kuier@TheCastle is more than a market. It’s the biggest family-friendly lifestyle event in the city. It takes place monthly at the Castle of Good Hope.

Besides browsing the 120 makers curated by the Craft + Design Institute, you can try your hand at tufting, cupcake candle crafting, slime making (yup, there’s workshops for kids too) and more. And this month they’re collabing with Thrift Fest, Cape Town's largest vintage market. Here’s 10 reasons to visit on 26 October.

1. SEE ALL KINDS OF CAPETONIANS THERE

It’s a warm and creative gathering of people from all walks of life. They bring along their families to enjoy shopping from artists and artisans and listen to the stories of the makers while their kids dance to the live music.

2. ACCESS TO THE CASTLE FOR FREE

For the price of the entry, you also get access to the 385-year-old Castle of Good Hope.

You can visit the Camissa room, old garrisons, a ceramics collection titled "Fired – An exhibition of South African ceramics", and the William Fehr collection of oil paintings, furniture, ceramics, metal and glassware.

3. EXPLORE THE STALLS & THE CASTLE

It opens at 10am and closes at 4pm. People tend to stay for a couple of hours, wander from stall to stall and into the nooks and crannies of the Castle. The market is in the square under stretch tents, and there’s a harvest table and comfy bean bags scattered everywhere.

4. 120+ VENDORS

There’s a smorgasbord of over 60 makers with interesting stories. The amazing luxury women’s wear designer Thabo Makhetha is there.

So are ceramists and textile designers, like Whimsical Collection, who do dreamy prints. Kingsdale Eporio, with their tongue-in-cheek, conversation-starter statement socks, have a stall too.

5. SPRING CREATIVE WORKSHOPS

What sets Kuier apart from a regular market are the creative workshops. At this month’s spring-themed workshops you can make things like micro mosaic necklaces, hand-painted zip pouches, rugs, and more.

And there’s workshops for kids too. At the Kids Creative Corner they can make slime, bead jewellery, felt keychains, cupcake candles and more.

6. NEW COLLAB WITH THRIFT FEST

This month Kuier is collaborating with Thrift Fest, Cape Town's largest vintage market. Thrift Fest will have over 80 vendors selling vintage clothing, accessories, and home decor.

There’s always a fashion show at Kuier. This month it’s Thrift Fest and emerging fashion designers from Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT).

7. FOOD TRUCKS: BAGELS, CAPE MALAY & MORE

There’s three anchor trucks and two new additions every month. People keep coming back for Ground Culture, loved for their burgers, Cape Malay House, and Local Brew. Ty’s Bagels is one of the pop ups this month.

8. FREE ENTRY FOR KIDS UNDER 7

Entry is discounted for market Saturdays. Families will be happy to know kids under seven get in for free, and it's R15 for pensioners, students and children aged seven to 17. For everyone else, it’s just R30.

9. SECURE & FREE PARKING

It’s easy access to the Castle via the Darling Street, there’s a side pathway. There's also arrows and signage on the street poles to point people to where the parking is. Plus there’s plenty of security.
