“The difference between a lady and a flower girl is not how she behaves, but how she is treated.” George Bernard Shaw
Who could forget Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison in 1964’s timeless film rendition of Pygmalion? Although Audrey will always be the only fair lady in many fans’ hearts, with a little bit of luck this loverly show will strike a positive chord with the classic’s numerous admirers.
My Fair Lady is coming to the Artscape Opera House from Saturday, 16 July, until Sunday, 7 August 2016, so if you feel like you could dance all night don’t keep Henry Higgins waiting. Although the plot should need no introduction, here’s a short synopsis:
A rather arrogant scholar of phonetics – namely, Professor Henry Higgins – wagers that he can transform any person’s accent to the point where they can pass as aristocracy at an embassy ball. He uses a cockney-speaking flower seller as an example; not betting on the fact that said flower seller will track him down and ask him to teach her – which is exactly what she does. The delightful Eliza Doolittle persuades Higgins to train her in the art of eloquence, and after much effort, finally begins to speak in an upper class accent.
She makes her societal debut at Ascot, and then fools everyone into believing she’s royalty at a grand ball. For Higgins, she’s his joke on the society he hates and his proudest achievement. However, Eliza wants more – she hates the way Higgins gives her no credit for her transformation and is indifferent towards her future. So she tells him she’s running away with a young man she met at Ascot and disappears, whereupon Higgins realises he’s ‘become accustomed to her face’ and finally admits how much she might mean to him.
Fans will no doubt already be anticipating singing along to hits like ‘The Rain in Spain’, ‘Get Me to the Church on Time’, ‘On the Street Where You Live’, ‘With a Little Bit of Luck’ and all the other catchy classics that have made this play a favourite for generations. Prepare to be enchanted by Eliza as you step into the magical world of Pygmalion.
