Spending time in the garden is a pastime enjoyed by many. South Africa is famous for its sunshine and fynbos, so enjoying them simultaneously just makes sense. Over the weekend of Saturday, 12 to Sunday, 13 November 2016, four very talented gardeners will open their masterpieces up for viewing.
By paying to view these charming secret gardens, you will be supporting a number of food garden projects including Abalimi Bezekhaya and Soil for Life. Both of these social upliftment organisations aim to teach people how to grow their own produce, on a small scale; these skills provide vital information and can be used in a commercial capacity.
The four gardens on show, while keeping them as mysterious as possible, are all located in the Constantia/Bergvliet area. These horticultural heavens range from big to small and professional to amateur. Firstly, there is Anthea’s large garden in Constantia. Anthea, with the help of her retired husband Peter, spends most of her time perfecting her wheel-like vegetable patch and thinking of new ways to develop her garden!
The other three gardens are even more mysterious; you’ll just have to attend to catch a glimpse into this garden paradise. Also on show are Bridget’s garden (in Constantia), Carel’s indigenous garden (in Constantia Hills) and Christine’s garden (in Bergvliet).
Also on the day, there will be plant sales and even a tea garden. Sunshine and tea served in the garden, doesn’t that just sound unbelievably quaint? If you want to pick up a pre-sale ticket, pop into the Ferndale Nursery in Brommersvlei Road, Peter Gillder Jewellery at Constantia Village and Sherwood Hardware in Ladies Mile.
TICKETS TO THE 2016 OPEN GARDENS IN CONSTANTIA
