This unassuming beach shack has bold dishes that you’d never expect to find in the quiet town of Onrus. Like dripping loaded hotdogs topped with nachos, salsa and jalapenos; or chewy, crispy waffle churros. Here’s our top picks of what to try at the Waffle Shack.
The main event at this seaside gem is the build-your-own-waffle bar. With a selection of all sorts of toppings – like jelly tots and beans, Smarties, Bar One pieces – kids can go wild.
And the chewy waffle churros are wonderfully crispy. There’s also a breakfast waffle topped with poached egg, bacon, tomato and avo pureé.

Milk on the Beach, which is the Waffle Shack’s sister restaurant, is renowned in Onrus for its sushi. The sushi and poke bowls at the Waffle Shack are just as good.
There’s poke bowls with salmon and tuna, as well as a vegan poke bowl (served with quinoa and wakame salad). You’ll find classic faves like salmon california rolls, salmon roses and fashion sandwiches on the sushi platter.

Each of the hotdogs is named after a breed of pooch (besides the vegan boerie).
There’s the American Pitbull with a smoky barbeque Russian, the German’s Shepherd with frankfurter and sauerkraut, and our favourite, the Mexican Chihuahua, topped with salsa, jalapenos and crushed nachos.

The popcorn G&T is surprisingly refreshing, not too sweet and not too bitter. It’s even topped with salted caramel popcorn, like a kid’s milkshake (but for adults).
If you’re looking for a more expansive cocktails list, there’s Milk on the Beach right upstairs. It has a wider food menu with dishes like spiced sesame calamari with peppadew mayo and oysters with spiced apple salsa. Traditional ramen is a new addition to Milk on the Beach.
Ultra thick shakes are also on the menu. Image: Milk on the Beach
Milk on the Beach is open: Monday to Saturday, 8am - 9pm; Sundays, 8am to 8.30pm
