RCS Gugulethu Reconciliation Day Race

Trot through the streets of one of Cape Town’s largest townships this 16 December

Start limbering up the legs and get that running gear ready, all in the name of reconciliation. Aptly themed “Run for Unity”, the organisers from RCS Gugulethu Athletics Club have brought back the exciting and energetic Gugulethu Race on Saturday, 16 December 2017.

Originally named the Amy Biehl Race, after the young American anti-apartheid activist who was murdered in Gugulethu in 1993, the challenge, which is now in its 17th year, was initially established to promote positive relations among the people of Mzansi. And while this focus is still part of its philosophy today, the event is also about encouraging a running culture in areas on the outskirts of the city.

The annual foot race invites participants to trot through the vibrant township of Gugulethu as part of either a 10km jog or a short 4.2km fun run. The longer race takes runners past local landmarks, including  Gugulethu Square Mall and Gugulethu Junction, and on to Manenberg, which was separated from Gugs under the Group Areas Act during apartheid, before heading back to the NY49 Stadium, where both races start and where the prize giving takes place at the end.

Those taking part in the fun run will be meandering through the streets of nearby neighbourhoods, and they can no doubt expect to be cheered on by residents along the way. 

So whether you’re keen to take on a 10km or would rather take it easy with a fun run, you can join in the festivities knowing that you’re running for an excellent cause. There are tons of lucky draws and some fantastic prizes to be won.
