Russell Brand Comedy Show in Cape Town

Known for his boyish charm and boisterous wit, this unconventional comedic Brit is a Brand above the rest

Russell Brand is coming to South Africa… Take two! This time, hopefully the impishly handsome actor and comedian will actually land on our fair shores as last time a glitch in his passport prevented him from doing so (as rumour has it). Brand will be performing only three shows, two at the Teatro at Montecasino in Johannesburg on the 1st and 2nd of October and one in Cape Town on Saturday, 3 October 2015 at GrandWest’s Grand Arena.

2015 RUSSELL BRAND TOUR DATES SOUTH AFRICA

  • 1 – 2 October 2015: The Teatro at Montecasino in Johannesburg
  • 3 October 2015: The Grand Arena at GrandWest Casino in Cape Town

Tickets go on sale on Thursday, 11 June 2015 via Computicket.com.

Brand’s TREWS Tour is all about uncovering the hard facts about the world of media and beyond (in the comedian’s usual irreverent, hilarious tongue-in-cheek way, of course). Brand had the following to say about the meaning behind TREWS, “Yes, that’s right. We are all individuals. We’ve been told freedom is the freedom to fulfil our petty desires but TREW freedom is freedom FROM our petty desires." After a lifetime of standing out, Brand’s new ambition is to become part of a crowd, because a crowd has the potential to effect real change in the world.

Brand was inspired to become an actor at the age of 15 when he took to the stage for the first time as the character Fat Sam in his high school’s rendition of the 1976 gangster film Bugsy Malone.

Upon discovering his talent for making people laugh, Brand entered the 2000 Hackney Empire New Act of the Year competition and his stand-up act not only won him fourth place in the final, but also caught the attention of Nigel Klarfeld, an agent at Bound and Gagged Comedy Ltd.

From there, the eccentric funnyman went on to host a slew of television and radio shows, and, most notably, was kicked off MTV’s payroll in 2001 for dressing up as Osama bin Laden the day after the September 11 attacks. His shock-jock ways got him into trouble again in 2008 while hosting “The Russell Brand Show” on BBC Radio 2 when he and co-host Jonathan Ross left obscene messages on seasoned actor Andrew Sachs’s answering machine.

While most might find Brand’s actions utterly distasteful, the masterful comedian and actor – he’s appeared in numerous movies and TV series – actually uses his transgressions, promiscuity (he’s won tabloid newspaper The Sun’s Shagger of the Year award three times in a row) and love for narcotics as material. His first one-man show (a tell-all tale about his extensive drug addiction), which he performed at the Edinburgh Festival, did just this, and two years later, the famous funnyman drew inspiration from his own most embarrassing moments as well as the medias’ reaction to him to put together his next stand-up act, “Shame”.

Needless to say, local audiences can look forward to a particularly interesting, and outright hilarious, performance when this controversial comic touches down on Mzansi shores.
