I'm singing in the rain
Just singing in the rain
What a glorious feeling
I'm happy again
Who could forget the suave presence, sensational dance moves and smooth voice of Gene Kelly – one of Hollywood’s greatest stars and the indomitable Don Lockwood in the original movie? Singin’ in the Rain has been re-enacted in various forms since its 1952 debut, and now Pieter Toerien’s masterpiece is gracing Artscape’s stage from Friday, 11 December 2015 to Sunday, 10 January 2016.
If the sun’s in your heart and you’re ready to love this fabulous musical then best you book quickly as it’s likely to sell out fast. For those not familiar with the plot, allow us to outline the famous story for you:
Set during the turbulent time of transition when Tinseltown went from silent movies to sound, the plot follows the evolution of two silent movie stars as they try to make it in the new age of talkies. The dapper Don Lockwood and his leading lady Lina Lamont decide to make a musical movie under the guidance of the quirky Cosmo Brown. Unfortunately, while Lina looks lovely, her voice is not up to par so the boys secretly hire chorus girl Kathy Selden to dub Lina’s singing and speaking parts. This is made all the more complicated by the fact that Don is secretly dating Kathy and Lina inevitably uncovers the men’s sneaky antics.
Charm, music and magic abound in this re-enactment of the old-school Hollywood hit, so sit back, relax and get ready to be swept off your feet by 12 000 litres of recycled water and the singing and dancing antics of some of the country’s foremost performers.
The talented cast includes Grant Almirall as Don Lockwood, Bethany Dickson as Kathy Selden, Steven van Wyk as Cosmo Brown and Taryn Lee Hudson as Lina Lamont. Singin’ in the Rain wouldn’t be the same without exceptional choreography and sublime sing-songs, so you can expect superb dance numbers coupled with scintillating sound.
