Char’d Grill & Wine Bar is an experiential restaurant for the senses, whether you try rare cuts of steak, fully prepped and aged in-house, or tinker with the craft gin atomiser. There’s also brandy, tequila and rum tastings. Who knew steak pairs so well with brandy?
Char’d Grill is situated in Hermanus Waterfront. Image: Char’d Grill & Wine Bar
Every steak at Char’d comes from free range, hormone-free and grain-finished cows (which eat grain and grass for their entire lifespan, unlike grain-fed cows) which improves the quality and taste of the steak.
Char’d, which also has a meat deli on site, serves rare cuts that you wouldn’t be able to find at most restaurants, like the Denver (strong beefy flavour with nice marbling) or caveman rib (incredibly tender with rich layers of fat).
There are plenty of sides too, like corn ribs and deep-fried mac and cheese balls. Image: Char’d Grill and Bar
The rare cuts aren't the only unique thing to experience at Char’d - their interactive gin tasting is unlike anything you’d see at a regular distillery.
Squeeze the balloon-like atomisers at the gin station to smell the rose botanicals of Musgrave Pink or the toffee apples that infuse Inverroche Amber. Then get to pick four favourites for your tasting.
Using the gin atomiser is a fun, interactive experience that you’re unlikely to find anywhere else. Image: Char’d Grill and Bar
On top of the gin atomiser, there’s also rum, tequila and brandy tastings. The three tastings on offer (Cape Brandy, Karoo Mezcal and Afrikanis rum) are all proudly South African labels.
Each tray is accompanied by three glasses. A standout is the Afrikanis Spiced Rum - with notes of caramelised pineapple and cinnamon, it tastes like Christmas in a bottle.
Plus, we spoke to Petri Hendricksz, the owner of Char’d, and got his recommendations for rare cuts of steak at Char’d Grill.
There’s plenty of other spirits too if you’d prefer not to do a tasting. Image: Char’d Grill and Bar
Char’d Grill is open: Monday to Friday, 12pm - 10pm; Saturday to Sunday, 10.30am - 10pm
