The art scene is changing and proof is in the pudding with this affordable art expo, which aims to give art collectives, organisations and artists a platform to showcase the pulse of African art. Conceptualised by ART AFRICA, That Art Fair splatters to the Palms Décor & Lifestyle Centre from Thursday, 18 February to Sunday, 6 March 2016.
Running alongside the well-known Design Indaba and the Cape Town Art Fair, this arty to-do is set to be affordable and accessible, with the intent of foregoing traditional gallery-driven expos in favour of putting the artist first. Aside from the fair, there’ll also be the highly-anticipated That Art Party with local musos performing and plenty of art-minded individuals breaking it down (Expressionist style) on the dance floor.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE 2016 THAT ART FAIR IN CAPE TOWN
ART & AFFORDABILITY: This art expo is set to showcase talent from all over Africa, and specifically aims to showcase artists that are usually not part of the so-called traditional art scene. Owning art or networking with the art community often seems unattainable for an outsider – this event seeks to break down those barriers while creating a positive platform for artists to flourish.
THAT ART PARTY: Art and music go together like good wine and food – and this expo is no different. Deemed That Art Party, attendees are welcome to boogie down with some of the country’s hottest musos. Attendees can look out for thought-provoking performance art and film screenings on the bill. More information will be released closer to the time so keep an eye on That Art Fair’s Facebook event page and official website. The party starts at 7pm on Friday, 19 February. There’s also a fabulous VIP opening bash on 17 February, with live performances, a screening by Emo de Medeiros and the official opening of That Art Bar.
NETWORK IN THE HEART OF THE ART DISTRICT: More than just selling art and looking at beautiful works, this expo creates a networking space for buyers and sellers alike. Art collectives and organisations are given the opportunity to meet like-minded people in the industry and to make connections that may further their careers.
LAUNCH OF THAT FILM FOCUS: This year’s event boasts a screening element in partnership with shnit International Short Film Festival and Sunshine Cinema. Weekly screenings will happen from Monday, 22, until Sunday 27 February, between 7pm and 10pm. Shorts, shots and DJs are promised, along with a thought-provoking programme.
ART AFRICA FORUM: Art, art and more art will be discussed by a panel of experts and the participating attendees at this exciting talk series kicking off on 27 February.
