Last Update: December 9, 2016
The Day of Goodwill (December 26), also known as Boxing Day, is a public holiday that takes place the day after Christmas. While it was traditionally used as a day for people to box up their Christmas gifts in the UK, South Africans tend to spend the day with family and friends, enjoying the warm summer weather in the Mother City.
Give yourself a well-earned break and enjoy the last few days of December with great people, delicious food and local entertainment before the New Year’s rush kicks in. Bring your family and friends along to share the special day with you!
We’ve put together a list of places to relax and soak up the sun this Boxing Day:
---
THINGS TO DO FOR THE DAY OF GOODWILL 2016 IN CAPE TOWN
---
Black Oystercatcher SOS Festival
Take a trip to the Cape Agulhas countryside on the Day of Goodwill and visit the charming town of Elim for a delightful oyster and wine festival. Black Oystercatcher Wines is hosting a three-day celebration of SOS – that’s Sauvignon Blanc, Oysters and Stout – where patrons can sip on fruity Sauvignon Blanc and creamy Stout while feasting on fresh oysters and more at the various food stalls. Sway to the sweet folk sounds of The Bottomless Coffee Band under an airy tent on the wine farm and take pleasure in a relaxing day out with the family.
COST: Tickets can be purchased from Webtickets.co.za and entry prices range from R50p/p to R150p/p per day. Children under the age of four years enter for free. For more information, email venue@blackoystercatcher.co.za or call +27 (0)28 482 1618.
Rooftop of Dreams
December is one of the hottest months of the year in the Western Cape, so you should definitely be spending most of your time splashing about at the beach or taking a dip in a pool. If sandy toes are not really your thing, cool down at the Rooftop of Dreams pool party at the Lagoon Beach Hotel & Spa for a beachside bash with Cape Town’s hottest EDM artists. Get your tan on, chill out in the pool and dance the night away this Boxing Day.
COST: Tickets can be purchased from Webtickets.co.za and are priced at R120p/p for Early Bird tickets, R200p/p for General Admission and R250p/p for Late Bird tickets.
Tribute Fest 2016
Honour some of the best musicians of the past and sing your heart out to beloved hits this Boxing Day. Tribute bands from all over the city are coming together at the Hillcrest Quarry to perform all our favourite songs by Elvis, Amy Winehouse, Tina Turner, Bob Marley, Led Zeppelin and more of the most loved artists of the last few decades. These talented musicians have mastered the art of imitation in such a way that it’s hard to believe you’re not seeing the real thing.
COST: Tickets can be purchased from Computicket.com and will cost R160p/p. Children under the age of 12 years enter for free. For more information, call +27 (0)21 976 4959 or email mike@hillcrestquarry.co.za.
Sizzled Summer Music & Food Fest
Make the most out of your day off and head over to the hottest party in the city. Sizzled Summer is a lively outdoor experience that takes place at the Castle of Good Hope and celebrates the diversity of our amazing city. The festival will feature an array of hip hop, house and reggae performers like Da Capo, Chief Rockers and Grimehouse. Since Capetonians love good local food so much, the party will host a marvellous food market filled with scrumptious dishes from gourmet chefs and food vendors. Please note that this party is strictly for people over the age of 21.
COST: Tickets can be purchased from Computicket.com from R100p/p to R150p/p or at the door for R200p/p.
Al Bairre Goes Goodwill Hunting
See a live performance by Al Bairre this Boxing Day at the Farmhouse Rocks concert in Scarborough. The quirky Cape Town-based band will be joined by the Sean Koch Trio, an alternative folk music group, and Manu Grace, a wickedly talented singer and the former keyboardist for The Aztec Sapphire. Bring a picnic blanket, enjoy great local music under the sun, and make sure to try the delicious food on offer at the Cape Farmhouse Restaurant.
COST: Tickets are available from Quicket.co.za and will cost R20p/p for kids under the age of 12 years, R80p/p for students and R100p/p for adults. Pre-sold tickets for adults are also available at R80p/p. For more information, call +27 (0)21 780 1246 or send an email to info@capefarmhouse.com.
