If you’re a fan of shopping for charming knick-knacks online then you’ve undoubtedly heard of the Mother City’s favourite cyber gift store, Tidy & Co. Now, the sweet virtual present boutique is occupying the Cape Craft and Design Institute’s (CCDI) Long Street pop-up shop space for the whole month of July, which means that lovers of beautiful things will have a veritable treasure trove to explore from Friday, 3 until Thursday, 30 July 2015.
Gift-giving is quite an art form – it’s difficult to find that perfect something that you just know your special person will love. Luckily, Tidy & Co.is on hand to help make the process far simpler, with a vast selection of design products that are organised according to age and personality types. This means that if you’re looking for something for your grandma, you can browse the ‘Gracefully Mellowing’ section or if you’re after a geeky gift for your gadget-loving guy, you can head to the ‘Nerdy, Super Smart’ part to find novelty items that’ll float his proverbial boat.
The CCDI leased the pop-up shop venue as part of the ‘Beyond 2014’campaign that aims to continue showcasing the city’s creative culture despite the end of Cape Town’s reign as World Design Capital last year. Various businesses can apply to occupy the space for a month, with a stringent selection process in place that demands that companies meet certain design qualifications. Tidy & Co. is the third establishment to occupy the arty hotspot, and the fact that its application to be here was successful is testament to its love for local design and its sublime selection of first-class products for sale.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE TIDY & CO. POP-UP GIFT SHOP IN LONG STREET
TREAT YO’SELF: It’s kind of inevitable that you’ll start by shopping for someone else and end up buying something for yourself. When faced with so many gorgeous gifts all arranged so that your favourite things are in one space, self-control becomes a thing of the past, and you might as well embrace this and apologise to your bank balance in advance. Best of all, the presents range in price, so you’re bound to find a little something that fits both your personality and your budget.
TREAT OTHERS: Tidy & Co. is all about helping you to make the people in your life feel appreciated and loved. And because of the clever way in which the gifts are arranged by category, regardless of whether your prezzie recipient is a fiery Scorpio or a vivacious Virgo, a colleague or the man you’d (probably) take a bullet for, you’ll easily find a token that makes their eyes light up.
KEEP CALM AND DRINK TEA: Did we mention that this quaint and quirky hotspot will also be hosting regular tea parties in its tea parlour at the back of the store? Yes, now you have both lovely things and elegant get-togethers to look forward to! To party in the parlour, you need to enter the competition to win a private tea bash for you and seven friends by subscribing to the Tidy & Co newsletter. Winners will be drawn randomly and can expect delights like Earl Grey-infused macaroons and salted caramel chocolate brownies, along with a special Tidy & Co. goodie bag and entertainment in the form of a fortune teller.
The tea parties will take place twice a week, and there’ll be a selection of scrumptious eats on offer, accompanied by bubbly and cheeses from around the world. The smorgasbord of gourmet savoury and sweet treats are inspired by select spices and salts from local caterers eat.art, so diners can expect beautiful bold flavours.
LOVE LOCAL: Tidy & Co. is a proud supporter of locally made products, with approximately 85% of its gifts being produced in South Africa. This means that not only do you get to enjoy the pleasure of buying the perfect gift, but you also have the wonderful knowledge that you’re supporting small business development in the Mother City – pretty cool, right?
