Ideal for family and friends, includes tennis court and cottage (sleeps 14)
Nestled between the mighty Twelve Apostles Mountain Range and the Atlantic Ocean lies Samadhi, a haven that combines the tranquility and stillness of nature with the cosmopolitan swing of Cape Town. It’s quiet, peaceful, beautiful, and you can hear birds (and the occasional horse and tennis ball). A few days here and you will have found your equilibrium.
The home is made up of two spaces, the main house, and a cottage. The house has four large bedrooms en-suite, a home gym, a dining room, very spacious kitchen with an island perfect for morning coffee gatherings or post-swim snacks, and a generous lounge with wide sliding doors that open out onto a fabulous deck with a bar and a spectacular view of Hout Bay and the sea below.
The cottage overlooks the tennis court and has a balcony from which you can drink gin and tonics and shout encouragement to the sweating players below. It has three lovely bedrooms, the main is en-suite, and a lounge with sliding doors leading onto the balcony. It’s charming and has a relaxed and convivial atmosphere.
If you love being surrounded by fine things, this is a house you’ll appreciate. Comfort is at the heart of the decor: in the main house the carpets have thick piles, you can sink into the sofas and armchairs – the latter were designed for the room by Andrew Dominic – with their comfy muted cushions. The kitchen cupboards slide seamlessly into their grooves and light up as they open, the coffee machine is state of the art.
Colours in the main areas are in muted creamy and grey tones with pops of colour. The dining room has a long wooden table set in an atrium-style room with sliding doors that roll easily back (no annoying tugging will happen here), letting in the pretty contained garden and mountain views behind. There are 14 (check) dining chairs padded in a beautiful, warm buttery yellow linen and stylish black, white and grey tiles underfoot. It’s a glamorous space for a dinner party.
Samadhi is home to art by Dylan Lewis, one of South Africa’s well-known sculptors, as well as Lionel Smit and large prints by photographer Freddie Child Villiers, especially commissioned by the owner. An impressive Kilfod Cement painting takes centre stage in the main lounge. All the art pieces are bold and make a statement in the house, which is decorated in more muted tones.
A nice feature of the house is that the bedrooms, four in the main house and three in the cottage, are quite separate from the main entertainment areas, which means seclusion from communal busy-ness or children playing around the pool is possible.
All have lovely views onto greenery and are stylishly decorated, with blankets from, amongst others, South African textile company Mungo, and cushions to snuggle into reading chairs or beds.
For exercise and play, there are many fine outlets: there’s the pool, a gym area with exercise equipment but also ideal for yoga classes, and, of course, the tennis court, where challenges can be played all holiday long. Going beyond the villa, Hout Bay is home to many stables and there’s the option of horse-riding. Plus it’s hiking territory, or you can get into the sea or even go see seals. For kids, World of Birds is just around the corner.
You could always hire your own chef – it being Cape Town there is no shortage of those skills, and Samadhi can help you organise that (along with cleaning staff) – but when you feel like venturing out, there is a whole lot to choose from. At the top of the hill towards Constantia is Beau Constantia and La Colombe, and just over the mountain in Noordhoek, at the end of the iconic Chapman’s Peak drive, is The Foodbarn, or search through our site to find the many other options in and around town.
In the low season (1 May - 30 September), the rate drops R20 0000 to R25 000 per night at Samadhi House.
Mid-season (1 October - 14 December) it is R35 000 per night, and the high-season rate is R45 000 per night.
