Mozzarella for everybody
Mozzarella Bar provides Cape Town with the white delight
Cape Town and surroundings have a plenty to offer in the matter of food and drinks – here you can find uncommon ingredients in many delis; restaurants for foodies offer unusual dishes; and the Cape winelands cater for the perfect wine. But something was missing. Mozzarella. Good, handmade Mozzarella.
This admittedly tiny but nevertheless existing market niche fills Mozzarella S.A’s Mozzarella Bar on Kloof Street since December 2010. "We are the one and only Mozzarrella Bar in South Africa," says Simone Briganti. "And here you get the best Mozzarella," adds a customer who’s sitting next to me on the counter.
I’m here for a Lavazza cappuccino (R10) and look around in the room. To the right of the entrance door on the wall is a refrigerated shelf, which offers packages of Mozzarella in different sizes (from R28 for 125g to R50 for 250g), Parma ham and other deli food. The counter is located in the middle of the room; where the staff prepares Mozzarella on ciabatta, salads and desserts.
Mozzarella Bar is a café, a bar and a restaurant all in one; and that’s all in one room. Whether you want to drink coffee and read the newspaper, eat lunch or go for a small bite in the evening – since it’s located in central Cape Town, the restaurant is the ideal spot for eating out. By the way: The owners of Down South Pie Bar, Carne SA, 95 Keerom and Caffe also run the Mozzarella Bar; all located in the city centre. And, nobody says that this will be their last innovative idea: and there is more to come is written on the back of their small flyer. So, we should be curious…
