They have an all-day breakfast; an expansive lunch menu, and cater to groups
Tshisanyama, amagwinya (vetkoek), fish and chips are favourite go-to convenience meals in Gugulethu. But Thulani Mguda and Tumi Mayenge, founders of two-month-old Orgasmic Gawulo in Gugulethu, noticed that locals had a hunger for more.
“Our customers speak food now. They see dishes in magazines or on TV and ask us to make it for them,” says Mayenge.
Mguda and Mayenge, who are Gugulethu natives, started catering for events and operating a food truck opposite Gugulethu Square, and really got to appreciate the expanding palate of their customers. After spending some time looking for a permanent spot to trade, they found a home at H&M, a well-known hangout in Gugulethu, opposite Gqudu tshisanyama.
Their mission, as Gugulethu natives, is to be a convenient spot for tasty food for locals, where their patrons can still chill and feel at home, as at any traditional tshisanyama.
The beef and chicken kebabs, grilled steak, honey-and-butter glazed dunked wings are loved by locals. Larger groups who want to share opt for food platters because they have something for everyone: riblets, chops, wings, meatballs, flatbread, salsa, steak with a creamy mushroom sauce, chicken and beef kebabs. You can build your own platter, too. For breakfast there’s a melt-egg sarmie with a side of greek salad, you can pick an omelette or a traditional English breakfast.
The location of Orgasmic Gawulo was intentional. It’s wedged between a car wash and an entertainment area where the neighbourhood hangs outs. The wooden picnic-style tables make you feel at home, and the decor is raw and untouched, while the ambience is unpretentious.
Note: They cater for private house parties and events.
Tip: Platters are available for groups of 4, 6 and 8.
The Bill: They have all-day breakfast and lunch menu ranging from R50 to R120
Opening Times: Thursday to Monday: 10am to 10pm
