Escape to a natural paradise in Newlands at the The Upper Liesbeek River Garden.
---
Keeping our city clean is pretty high up on our priority list, and on the first Saturday of every month caring locals are joining forces to give the Liesbeek River a good old clean. The waterway is incredibly polluted and the growing amount of plastic waste is concerning, to say the least. The August event is happening on Saturday, 5 August 2017 and it will focus on the area between the N2 highway and The River Club.
The clean-up will start at 8:30am, and the cleaning party will move along the river collecting plastic and other rubbish littering the riverbank. Because the waterway is so polluted, the organisers have requested that all volunteers bring non-disposable gloves to protect you from any possible icky stuff. Also, make sure that you wear old clothes that you don’t mind getting a bit dirty and some boots that are up for a day of river cleaning.
This event is associated with Friends of The Liesbeek, a local organisation that focuses on restoring the river's ecological systems to tip-top shape. The amount of pollution that goes into the Cape Town river systems is worrisome, and organisations like Friends of The Liesbeek play a critical role in keeping the waterways as clean as possible.
While the event starts at 8:30am, the organisers have specified that you can arrive at any time between then and 3:30pm. If you can just help out for an hour or so that is perfectly fine. Even an hour will make a difference, and you can join at whatever time you wake up! As the day goes on, the party will move further down the river, so if you can’t see them when you arrive, don’t worry they will be along the bank somewhere.
ENTRANCE TO THE 2017 LIESBEEK RIVER MONTHLY CLEANING EVENT
Taking part in this environmentally friendly event is absolutely free. Please note that you do have to remember your own gloves. If you have any questions, please direct them to the organisers on +27 (0)78 008 0464 or drop them an email on trash@fol.org.za.
