City of Cape Town excels in Carbon Disclosure Project

The Mother City ranks globally in the top five for measuring and disclosing climate action data

Last Update 29 March 2017

With the growing need to be eco-friendly, it is a wonderful achievement that the City of Cape Town has ranked in the top five cities in the world for demonstrating leadership in the climate discourse. The Mother City is placed next to cities that include Paris, Mexico City, Vancouver and Sydney. The ranking includes 533 other cities where the climate action data is measured and disclosed annually to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).

The accolade saw Cape Town joining over 100 regional and state governments and over 5800 companies who are also measuring and disclosing  climate action data. This is done in order to manage emissions and to build resilience to impacts of climate change. The City of Cape Town has stated that they are pleased that the work being done is being acknowledged as playing a part in the global efforts to address climate change.

The work being done in addressing climate change is placed in line with the City’s Organisational Development and Transformation Plan (ODTP) and it aims to create an organisation that is more progressive, dynamic and customer-centric. The CDP is a not-for-profit organisation which provides a global platform for cities and companies to manage, measure and disclose their climate and energy data.

The City of Cape Town’s 2016 submission to the CDP demonstrated actions such as lower carbon energy supply generation, reducing emissions through waste management at landfill sites, sourcing 10% - 20% of electricity from renewable energy,on-site renewable energy generation as well as the support of clean technologies and their development in industries.
