Another effort by The Mother City to save water
Last Update 09 February 2017
In another attempt to save water, the City of Cape Town is closing several public pools for most weekdays. Starting Monday, 13 February 2017, public pools will be closed from Monday to Thursday with the exception of Seapoint, Mnandi Resort pool and four indoor facilities in Long Street, Retreat, Blue Downs and Strand.
These extreme measures come after the recent level 3b water restriction by the City of Cape Town in a desperate last plea to citizens to aid in the crisis the city finds itself in. The Safety, Security and Social Services Mayoral committee member, JP Smith, stated that attendance during weekdays averaged at 5 people per day during February and March 2016, with 150 people on weekends.
With these numbers, the logical plan forward would be to close during the week, as it would not impact as many people as it does on weekends. Although the situation is not ideal, it should be noted that the severity of the water shortage requires all residents of the Cape Town area to do their bit for the longevity of water usage in the city.
The pools will be open on Fridays from 2pm to 5pm and weekends from 10am to 5pm. These closing times will be implemented until the end of March 2017, when pools close for the winter season.
